Don't even get me started on East Village: a complete apocalypse disaster with mentally ill homeless people and drug addicts and full of business closures.

For example, most people outside of LA know that Angelenos generally suck, but few people know about San Diegans (largely a lazier and dumbed-down version of LA people).

Hawaii, is a place highly desired by outsiders as well, but most people who live there aren't all that high on it.

If people knew about the situation on the ground in SD, you'd see less domestic in-migration. It wouldn't stop the foreign immigrants, legal and illegal, however.
Really? I've lived here for 45 years and I still consider it desirable.

We vacationed here for over 30 years, and when we retired we chose to move here. Have not regretted a moment. We came from the LA suburbs, and this has been a wonderful place to live after that. People friendly, many things to see and do that cost little or nothing. No regrets at all.

The major problem with downtown San Diego is that the topper doesn't like it.

Yes, just as some areas are deteriorating and problems like homeless people are becoming more common, this is common in many areas, so for many it is still "better". However more citizens move out of CA than move in, so many no longer see it as valuable as it once was.

Situation has changed a big since I first posted on this thread. Downtown SJ is much worse. It's very dead, dirty, and not thriving. It's a lot worse than San Diego's. Downtown SD is at least seeing lots of new high rise construction. SJ: not so much. It's in decline. Downtown SD is so much better off. So it could be worse. Both downtowns should take cues from Philly and Chicago: the two downtowns are stellar and awesome. They're thriving and very lively with lots of energy. There's hope for Downtown SD in the future but not so much for SJ since it's so suburban mentality.
