I hope you're right and that the project breaks ground soon.

Agreed. Plus I know it'll be good for the area, so I won't be TOO disappointed when they finally break ground.

Yeah I wish downtown had a TJs. But I don't think they open stores in downtown areas.

They want the hotel to promise to hire union labor and I believe use unions for construction.

Democrats let in illegal immigrants, then get mad when they take the construction and service jobs from the unions...LOL.

It's unfortunate since there are Trader's Joe and Whole Foods, along with Safeway in Downtown SJ. I know it's not part of the thread. If it's so available in Dt. SJ, then why can't it be available in Downtown San Diego. Downtown San Jose has these stores for over 4 years and 10 years in case of Trader's Joes.

There are already several grocery stores downtown, and maybe the city doesn't want a Trader Joe's downtown, or maybe the company doesn't want to build one downtown. The one in Hillcrest isn't that far, and that's where the downtown people probably shop at.

I've only been inside of one once, just to check out their prices, and I can't see what the big deal is with their high prices.

As I believe somebody had mentioned, there are several grocery stores in downtown San Diego, including Ralphs, Albertsons, Jimbo's (which is very similar to Sprouts), Grocery Outlet, and the newly-opened Roma Market in Little Italy, which is smaller than this local chain's full size supermarkets but provides a full service, European style smaller grocery store in a Little Italy. Adding the Whole Foods will make it 5 large grocery stores and one small grocery store within walking distance of downtown. Hop in your car, and within 5 minutes towards Hillcrest and Mission Hills, you can add Trader Joe's, another Ralphs, an enormous flagship Vons, which is the same as Safeway, Lazy Acres, Whole Foods, and Sprouts. Head over the Coronado Bridge, and there is an independent Gourmet Grocery store called Boney's, which is an offshoot of Henry's, which was bought out buy sprouts, along with another Vons and another Albertsons. Drive 5 minutes down Harbor Drive to Point Loma, and you've got the huge Vons at NTC with the outdoor produce section in between the two buildings that housed various sections of the store, plus several more grocery stores including sprouts and Trader Joe's. So that gives you around 20 grocery store within a 5 minute driving radius of downtown, five of which are currently walkable within the downtown core. If anything, I find that the San Diego metro area as a whole is somewhat oversaturated in terms of the number and variety of Supermarket chains.

When my son in law lived in Little Italy (after moving here from NYC), he ordered a lot of his groceries through Amazon.com's groceries to your door option.

He supplemented with items he bought at the Little Italy farmer's market, and from from Mona Lisa and Little Brazil. Also, Little Italy has so many restaurants that you really could eat out all the time if you so desired (not quite the same as Manhattan's surplus of restaurants, of course).

He only seemed to feel the need to drive down to the Ralph's downtown once a month or so.

I think what my son in law did is what the architect who designed those new condos going in on India Street - something like 500 units with NO parking - had in mind. It will be interesting to see if he's right and more people will give up their cars living in Little Italy/Downtown.
