Or will residents have to contend with artificially created bottlenecks due to that road being widened to six lanes in some segments but not others as some apartment managers does not want to deal with parking alternatives should street parking in front of their busy complexes be removed. Should parking lots be built in lieu of street parking on the empty lots near those stubborn apartment complexes.

Nowadays those bottle necks not only cause traffic congestion it also cause near misses due to drivers being caught by surprise by the disappearing of the new right lane.

Congestion on arterial streets is more often a result of intersection and lane LOS (level of service), rather than # of lanes. Is there a specific segment you are talking about?

Side note- let's all just be thankful that Carlsbad finally got its act together and extended Melrose and made the connection w/ Faraday at the southern end (like 8 years ago). Business Park Drive used to be an absolute nightmare when they were building Carrillo Ranch and redeveloping the race track property...

The segment between 78 and just south of Oceanside blvd. Though I believe Oceanside also needs to pitch in in order for the widening to be complete between 78 and Oceanside blvd.

Though what you mentioned is true about intersection and lane LOS. Though the way they widen some segments but leave narrow segments in between will cause even more traffic headache as traffic increases as cars would have to squeeze into bottlenecks where the number of lanes reduce abruptly. Drivers will naturally fill up three lanes when there are three lanes but will need to squeeze back together when it narrows to two lanes. This is often the case with road widening projects that are not widened all the way through.

The main reason they did not fully complete the widening for now was because a major apartment complex and a trailer park on the opposite side along that stretch, both with very limited onsite parking, their managements complained to the city they don't know what to do if street parking is removed from the 1/2 mile long curbline in front of the two complexes, that stretch of curb is normally filled with parked cars associated with the apartments/trailer park. Though sans that section, the rest of Melrose between 78 up to the border of Oceanside, was widened anyways by removing the curbside parking. Though the Oceanside section still remains four lanes wide. Though I would be curious are there plans to make alternatives to that parking issue in the future i.e turning empty lots adjacent to these complexes into parking lots?

Parking issues in this area will eventually have to be mitigated by going up, not out. The building rate is really taking off, unlike infrastructure improvements that should also be done - but the expense makes that too much to justify at this time.

Improvements will eventually come, but at a huge expense.

Who knows, maybe they'll eventually punch Cannon through also and do a full connection to Mar Vista Drive, as has been talked about for many years.

It'll be interesting to come back in ten years or so and see what's changed, I might just do that if I'm still vertical.

I'm guessing that the precious residents of Carlsbad won't allow it. They fill up Vista/SM/Oside with traffic because they refuse to allow big box stores, but don't want anyone driving through their community.
