[quote=wisker;3328545] I was just there yesterday returning a uhaul truck on Main and 2nd Street and the area was "bad".

I am in and out of that area all the time, and have never had one minute of fear for my safety. The houses around there are not high income, but I go in and out of there all the time with no problem at all. I am a single female!

Washington near Jamacha is a better area...but Washington is a long street that goes the length of El Cajon and can encompass "not so good areas"....it depends on which end you are on.

I lived in EC for ten years 77-87 and lived off of Bradley, on Anza and in Cottonwood...Cottonwood was by far the best area....not sure about it now, though. It is near Valhalla High School.

I was just there yesterday returning a uhaul truck on Main and 2nd Street and the area was "bad". Crack heads all over the place and this was at 4pm. I wouldn't even walk in the area in broad daylight.

I find that really odd. I was born and raised in East County and this is not a bad area. I was just there today, a block off of Second/Main buying my daughter a Halloween Costume at Party City. Families walking with their kids, people walking dogs, banks, restaurants. Just a normal part of any town.

I used to live in that area, it definitely seems working class with some unsavory people but overall I think its an ok place, most areas you probably wouldn't want to take a walk in the neighborhood at night but as long as you don't go looking for trouble I don't think you'll find it. Property theft can be a problem though so don't leave anything in your car, etc.

Default El cajon

What about winter gardens? Looked at nice condo there today at affordable price. Area seemed ok on 2nd st but hard to tell. Also drove on broadway. Looked decent. Not fantastic but not scary either. Is this a safe area to live?

I realize this thread is really old but I thought I'd respond anyway, in case anyone else has questions about that area.

Washington Ave in El Cajon is a very busy main artery. (Washington STREET is in La Mesa and it borders a park.)

The houses on Washington are all very close to the street so the only thing separating you from the traffic is the sidewalk. The houses are almost right on top the sidewalk. The end result is that you're just a few feet away from traffic, even when you're in the living room.

If you have a 2 yr old I strongly suggest that you get child-proof locks for the doors and whatever gate there is on the yard because they are FAST at that age and if he gets out, he'll be in the traffic before you have a chance to wonder where he is.
