was my friend right in telling me that the gas tax only added 10-12 cents per gallon, or was my friend in the wrong?

Yeah, there was no coverage of Bob Filner's indiscretions.

There's the problem right there. Democrats offered the "pretty boy" and the "surfer" as the competition. Pretty boy was hardly the local business owner he claimed, and what did the surfer ever do?

Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair & Accountability Act of 2017, would trigger a 20-cent per gallon increase in diesel taxes, a 12-cent per gallon hike in gas taxes and a 5.75 percent increase in diesel sales taxes. Vehicle license fees would be raised an average $38 per vehicle. Drivers would also face a new annual fee to be paid with their vehicle registration, ranging from $25 to $175 depending on the value of their vehicle. The taxes and fees would rise each year with inflation.
California Legislature Approves Gas-Tax Hike; Bill Goes To Gov. Brown « CBS Los Angeles

oil burners took the brunt of it

That doesn’t count. Gloria Allred was involved. There’s no way around media coverage when she’s around.

hmm .. seems a little steep especially the increase on Vehicle Licensing Taxes.

I'm not against sacrifices to repair crumbling bridges, but perhaps a stay on Senator/Representative pay increases/raises included with this bill would be a greater balance with sacrifice for all, LOL

Nice try. UT was a conservative learning publication at the time of Filner.

Also, there are some stories that just can't be covered up because outlets are forced to cover them after smaller non-mainstream outlets pick them up.

Whiny Republican woe-is-me-isms that the big-bad media is out to get them. The #MeToo movement has gotten as many Democrats as Republicans - - and they've been covered in the "liberal media" as much as the Republicans who fell from grace have been.

Well actually the media did do a good job of not talking about his behavior before, during, or after the election. Once he announced he was running for mayor, one of my businesss partners told me of the stories of him both here, and in Washington, that he heard from his friends in the political circle. When the women finally came forward it seemed like it was word for word of what I was told. I’m still shocked to this day more wasn’t made of it before the election.
