Yes, it is part of the only rail link between San Diego and the rest of the country. It serves freight, commuter rail, and Amtrak (Amtrak's second busiest line after the Northeast Corridor).

It's funny though, I feel like I never see trains below when I pass over Rose Canyon on one of the bridges...

Thanks.

Do you think this provides significant noise pollution to the houses south of it in University City?

Not sure. I never heard it while visiting friends at the Lucera complex, which is the closest residential neighborhood to the tracks (on the north side). I'd try to find an individual who lived on the south side to confirm. There aren't any at-grade crossings at or near Rose Canyon, so you don't have to worry about that at least.

I think MCAS Miramar would be more of a sound nuisance than the train tracks. Flight path is directly over the neighborhood and the jets infrequent, but loud. One of them actually crashed in 2008 at the intersection of Cather and Huggins, very close to the high school.

Yes that train is loud. I can hear it clearly at night if I have a window open.

Do you live south of the tracks in University City?

I'm considering buying a house in that area, just trying to understand the potential noise sources. Is it something you would hear clearly with the windows closed?
