I was just curious to see how it is like living in Barrio Logan..

Is crime a big issue there?

How about gangs?

Is there a strong sense of community there?

What are the perks of this neighborhood?

Barrio Logan, in my opinion, feels safer and cleaner than alot of Downtown San Diego. But you might check the crime stats for the specific zip code.

I don't know much about living there, but a friend of mine introduced me recently the area South of the Coronado Bay Bridge on Logan Avenue between Chicano Park and National Avenue which is seeing a bit of a resurgence as far as eateries, store fronts, a coffee shop and even a brewery. The neighborhood has bi weekly lower rider mini show/cruise every other Weds afternoon/evening in this area that might be worth checking out, as a matter of fact it happens today. I am not really into low riders, but I thought it was a cool concept and a way to revitalize the neighborhood while allowing it to hang on to its roots.

Perks of the area North of the Coronado Bay Bridge are that it has its own Trolley stop and of course the shopping center where the North Gate Market is. Also, Cesar Chavez park is is directly North of the bridge and directly on the bay.

I lived there for three years, and didn't have any problems.

Logan Heights is kind of an extension of greater North Park and Golden Hill, old, older and more unevenly maintained. Before the freeways went in it was all one grid. Mostly small homes as it's always been mostly a working-class area. It gets pretty suburban as you get past the 15 fwy and transitions more to homeowners and older families. It's more of an old-school Mexican-American area than an immigrant gateway type place.

barrio area is more of a mixed area with young people and some new apartments and gentrification creeping in, also is a much more commercial and industrialized area. There are some smaller cottage type homes and a lot of old large homes divided into apartments.

Indeed! It’s the Brooklyn of San Diego, super cool and artsy and just a little rough around the edges. I don’t know what it’s like to live there (I’m probably not cool enough haha) but it’s one of my favorite areas to go out in the city. We went down there last Sat. Night with another couple (all of us in our late 50s) and had a great time. Started out at Border X, live band and friendly crowd- moved down to Barrio Dogg for an amazing hotdog and watched the low riders parked in the median come to life. There was an inordinate amount of skate boarders rolling past which I thought to be odd for the area and then we stumbled into a world premier skateboarder film sponsored by Slappy’s Garage on 17th St. at Bodega Gallery with well over a couple of hundred cool skater punks and PBR’s in abundance. Finished up the night Thorn St. Brewery with a real friendly crowd. There is an art crawl every 2nd Sat. of the month.

Cool, vibrant, artsy and safe but, Shhh, don’t tell the suburbanites huddled up in Carmel Valley frightened to travel south of the 8.
