While he wouldn’t be my first choice, it does show the Padre ownership has a pulse and cares about its fans by spending some money. 10 years for $300 million with a player opt out option after 5 years. Apparently this is the largest deal ever for a free agent in American sports.

Regardless of what you may think of him as a player I’ll take this as a win. It’s been quite some time since the Padres have had a bonafide superstar in their prime (he’s only 26). I’m still quite shocked they opened up their wallets that much.

I've lived out here since 2005. In that time the Padres have had Adrian Gonzalez, Jake Peavy, Trevor Hoffman and . . . ?

Getting Machado will get me out to games this year. And it's perfect timing with my son turning 8 in April - - maybe it will give him a real hometown team to root for (since the opportunities are obviously slight).

The San Diego Fleet is a hometown team. Mike Martz, the head coach, grew up in Clairemont. He went to Madison High.

I can root for them . . . although needing financial assistance to make payroll in the second week of your existence? Let's just say, I'm not going to get too emotionally attached.

They need to go all in now.

No one foot in and one foot out. I would take all the prospects they accumulated and turn them into some starting pitchers (which their void of right now). This move gives you a five year window.

And thank you Padres...you've now made my teams (Indians) ability to re-sign their star player nearly impossible with this contract.

Crazy money for an ill-tempered primadonna. Does anybody not think the Padres could have made some better deals?
