Common theme around here is it is expensive and jobs/pay are somewhat lacking. Otherwise life is peachy if you have money or a good paying job. !

Top 5 highest housing costs in the country and a job market that's in about the 15-20th position by most estimates. It's not really the type of a city where you can "make it big" except in a few circumstances, mostly just because making it big is such a big number here.

Otherwise, all the typical problems that come along with a place people really want to be - traffic, crowding, taxes, etc.

San Diego is best if you are independently wealthy, have a high paying job in a niche field, it's pretty tough on the folks working 'normal' jobs, and really tough on the working class. It's also really tough on families, the elderly, disabled, etc. If you moved here 20-30 years ago and bought in, have a government-type job or are self employed, it's great.

.
San Diego has the 5th highest median income among US cities..........

https://www.statista.com/statistics/...ies-in-the-us/

..............and the 5th highest home prices

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/27/most...in-the-us.html

So the home affordability issue is not a great as some people make it out to be. If you are professional and reasonably successful, you can afford to live here if you have reasonable expectations for a living space.

Besides that point, there are very few drawbacks to living in SD. The weather is great(unless you need cold and snow)! The job market is very healthy right now in the right fields (biotech, wireless comm, aerospace and military, certain IT niches). Fantastic place to raise a family. Very low crime (lowest among major cities).

housing is very expensive for what you get. If you live inland a little bit where its more affordable you lose the benefits of the weather.

Yeah because it’s just like Phoenix in the summer, and Chicago in the winter, the second you cross the 5.
