I drove up to Temecula on Saturday and couldn't believe how fast everyone was driving.

I usually set my cruise control around 72 and stay in one of the middle lanes but I almost got ran over by everyone. I bumped it up to 78 and was still getting passed by 75% of the cars and not a single cop in sight.
I'm not talking 80 mph, I'm talking 90 or more.

It was about 10 o'clock and started on 52 West and continued up the 15 until Escondido.

What is the rush?

Escondido to Temecula is a practically empty stretch of highway. Modern cars are more than capable of traveling at higher speeds much more safely than they were 20 years ago.

You'll encounter the same thing when driving to Vegas. The avg speed is probably 85 I'd guess.

Why dawdle going only 70, when you can get there faster at 80+.

I'm not encouraging "super-speeders" at say 100+, but obviously the "speed of traffic" is higher on that stretch because people feel safe and comfortable to do.

The 5 up to OC is the same way, many times the right lane is wide open as opposed to the 'fast' left lane.

I suppose when you know you have a long drive ahead of you, you tend to drive faster. 85 MPH is a good speed between Escondido-Temecula and Oceanside-Dana Point as long as the road is not wet. I usually only travel at 60-70 in city of San Diego when I know my drive will only be about 20-30 mins.

That stretch of 15 I always refer to as an autobahn by the typical speeds there. I’ve never found it particularly intimidating or seemingly unsafe but like you tend to just stay in the center lanes and plug along at 75 or so and let the others fly on by.

Strangely it wasn't as fast between Escondido to Temecula. There were still super speeders but nat as many.

Because there is more of a police presence in that stretch.

There are police along 15. There is a speed trap by the 15/52 going South and they pick off speeders in the car pool lane mainly going North during Rush hour.

You have four lanes and one on the far right (get on and off the highway lane). How is easy is it to just stay out of the far left lane let people pass on the left. The extremes of course cause havoc not the typical 75-85mphers. Its the 100 and the 55ers.

My typical commute at 5ish am on the 805 S I'm doing 75-78 trying to stay with traffic and I'm not even close to what the average is. I'd say 88 mph is probably average. Never see a cop before 6 so it's no wonder everyone is flying. A guy I worked with lived in Temecula and said he put cruise on 100. Many days he'd blow past me like I wasn't moving.

I definitely experienced this on a daily basis. The 8 West in the mornings has become gridlock on certain days but people are so damn impatient that I’ve actually seen drivers in the fast lane wanting to drive on the emergency lane that’s how much in a hurry people are in nowadays, so speeding on the 8 isn’t really an option.

On the other hand once you get on the 163N and the 15-N, it’s seriously the autobahn no matter what lane you’re in. 85MPH seems like the norm. I’ve gone 90 at times because of so many drivers riding my ass, that if I slow down slightly I might get run down!

I rarely see CHP on the freeways in SD, and they seriously need to crack down on speeders that force other drivers to speed too because they could be at risk of an accident just by going the speed limit.

The rush is because there’s so many people in SD than ever before, so people feel the need that they have to beat the crowds. We’re such a spread out region which doesn’t help matters.

Everyone just wants to get home ASAP, and or get to where they want go after work. Californians have always been known to be crazy impatient drivers.

I find drivers in L.A. to be more sane than drivers in SD. Reason being that there’s so much traffic that drivers can’t really speed like they can down here.

It almost feels like everyone is driving a sports car, when even guys in lifted trucks and big rigs are hauling ass left and right. You’d think since gas prices are still so high that it was cause drivers to slow down and conserve fuel, but nope.

Thoughtless self centered drivers.
