Hi,

I moved to Point Loma last year. So far, I don't like San Diego. I really haven't made progress in figuring the city out on my own, so figured I'd ask here and filter through all of the "then leave" responses I expect to get.

I'm 30 and trying to find mentally engaged people to be friends with, it seems like I only encounter flower children or flakes who are more interested in smoking dope than getting a coffee. I thought I found two friends; one ended up being gay and kept asking me to cuddle, the other pretty much dropped off the radar when I injured myself on the way to visit her and ended up in surgery. My doctors and some nurses were cool, but it's generally unethical for them to hang out with patients. I don't know where else I'd meet those types since they work all the time.

Really wish I could find a quiet walkable place with good food, respectful people (people in OB are ironically intense - yelling at others to 'relax' at times) where socializing would take less effort. Garage would be amazing albeit probably impossible.

Are insects a common problem in all the old houses here? People recommend OB to me, but it looks like all the houses are just as bad. My house in Point Loma has carpet beetles. And clothes moths. Now there are mice living in the walls, I had to drown one that was in my garbage can last week. Hoping I can kill the rest before the procreate. I found a stink bug inside last night. And brown widows have taken over my furniture on the back patio. I spray them, they die, their webs remain (annoying), and two weeks later it's infested again. Luckily, only one cockroach this past year, outside on my screen, I think it was looking for water. Luckily, only one brown widow inside, but I woke up with it crawling on me in bed. Nightmare fuel.

I liked Point Loma bc I like some of the restaurants, accessibility to work (Liberty Station), and the accessibility to the rest of the city - till I shattered my ankle on the POS city sidewalks here and had to get surgery. Lawyer said it was the city's fault but he wouldn't take the case bc San Diego is slow rolling lawsuits bc of all the claims they're getting these days.

Omg, and my utility bills... I don't know why people say the weather here is great. Since there's no good AC or heat in most building I find myself in, the winter/summer extremes feel worse than the Northeast (the -30 F to 98 F with humidity wasn't so bad since bldgs were designed to handle it). I was stuck inside June-Sept, my coworkers eventually forced a portable AC unit on me bc they thought it was too hot, and my bills are $100/mo with sparing use.

FYSA, not prepared to leave the city without a fight as the job I have here allows me to save 50% of my net income. I could "retire in place" if I suffer through six more years. That's theoretically enough time to buy a house $650k or less and - assuming no major downturn - still grow finances.

Anyway, any advice is appreciated. Well, mostly any advice. If I can get the "...another complaint thread!" or "just leave" responses off your chest in advance that would help. I am not sure what to do or even explore here.

Join www.meetup.com to "try" to make some friends.

My apartment has no bugs, no mice, no a/c, and my SDG&E runs around $40 in the summer, and $25 other months. Just find yourself another place to live.

This.

The major problem is where he is living. I lived in SD County twice and had minimal bug problems.

Where are you living? I haven't bothered with pest control because the house is so old, the carpet beetles will easily just come back from the garden again. Other areas of the city I'd live in seem to have the same old house problem... maybe hardwood floors would help enough. Otherwise not sure how to mitigate this without moving to a "newer" part of the city, which have their own drawbacks... noise or far from work/fun

I have an apartment in mid-city. I don't have any carpeting, and won't live in a place with carpeting, so that may be part of your problem. I get occasional spiders and flies, and my cat has fun trying to catch them. An alligator lizard came in once through a small crack in the security door, and she wanted it very badly, but I escorted it back outside.

I don't need a/c, because I use a circulating air fan. https://www.lasko.com/products/20-in...or-fan-a20100/

Thanks, I don't want to live in a place with carpeting either after this. I hear animals (not allowed at my current place) commonly bring fleas back inside here. I have a hard time discerning whats actually true though.

I am in a stucco house, I am unfamiliar with how houses are constructed here, but this place is like a damn oven some days. I have a couple fans, but only get good circulation if I leave the back door open and then I get a bunch of black flies investigating throughout the day.

So far, it seems like San Diego is the same temperature at night as it is during the day. I can't sleep well when it's 70-75+ degrees and have therefore been going into work miserable most of the time I've been here. I can't figure out how much of that is just Point Loma (lots of pavement to radiate heat, wind dies when sun goes down) and how much is the house I'm in. ~9PM-ish and ambient outdoor temp is pretty similar to the daytime. I haven't gone outside at 3am much at all.

Point Loma is a unique place in San Diego. You have the Pacific Ocean on one side and San Diego Bay on the other side. Bugs love water and bugs on Point Loma are to be expected.

Also, Point Loma is popular with retirees and short-term rental properties. I don't see a fit with a 30 year old trying to put down roots in San Diego.

I used to live in Point Loma (Sunset Cliffs) and liked it. But I'm twice your age. If I had to live in Point Loma @ 30 years old, I'd be hanging out at Liberty Station. That place has grown like a weed and it's a fairly young professional crowd.

And finally, this has been an unusual year for weather. Not hot. Not cold. Just an unusually high dew point. We do not usually have 70 degree nites. My house does not have central AC and I've been running my bedroom AC unit every nite.

Someone suggested looking for a meetup group to try to find friends which is a good idea. I would also suggest looking for volunteer activities where you could meet people.

Not everyone who moves to San Diego loves it here. I think you really need to take a look at why you don't like it here and decide if this is the place for you. My daughters (mid to late 20's) live in OB and PB where there are lots of younger people. Maybe you just need to move apartments before deciding this isn't the place for you.

If you want to stay in the city Barrio Logan, Hillcrest, (everybody isn’t gay there, lol- I guess I must add, not that there is anything wrong with that) University Heights, Normal Heights, North Park, South Park and Golden Hill would all be areas where there are more young people and street life where it is easier to connect with some potentially interesting people and activities. Point Loma is pretty much snoozeville.

Untrue. Fleas can hitch a ride on your shoes or clothes. My cat doesn't go outside, and is on flea control, but I still see an occasional flea inside. There's no escaping it.
