" SIGH "

I use the Coaster train quite often to go to Mexico and back. Today after a 45 minute trolley ride from the border I went into the station to use the bathroom....... WHICH NOW HAS A CODE LOCK ON THE DOOR.
SIGH so where can I use the bathroom now if I am going on a Coaster train but not an Amtrak ?

Wasn't there a hepatitis scare just last year because people were urinating on the street ? Unfortunately I am going to be forced to do the same thing and I really don't want to for several reasons.

Anyone have any ideas for bathrooms for NON Amtrak customers ?

Just pathetic. Mexico has 5 peso bathrooms all over the place and we can't.

They’ve had a lock on that bathroom for as long as I can remember. There’s a Starbucks near Santa Fe Depot and other food places nearby. Go in one of them. Chances are they have a lock with all the homeless around. You’ll have to buy something and then use the restroom.

Can't you just ask an employee for the code? That's what I do. They've never asked to see a ticket or anything.

This.

As long as you don't look homeless, the hotels downtown will let anyone just walk in.

As a matter of fact, I just used the Westin's (2 blocks from Santa Fe Depot) restrooms literally last week. Walk in the front from Broadway, go up the escalators to the 2nd floor and the restrooms are around the corner. The Westin will be the closest hotel to Santa Fe Depot that I can think of as most of the towers in that immediate are office or residential buildings.

I do the same thing when driving around, if I gotta go # 2 (TMI, I know) , I am finding the nearest hotel.
Way nicer and more sanitary than using gas station restrooms. LOL

The banning of pay toilets =
Hepatitis A outbreak =
the lasting legacy of March Fong Eu whose main claim to fame was writing the state law that banned pay toilets.

Unintended consequences.

A shame to see some of these comments on here. It seems like using the bathroom is such a huge issue in this country especially with gender rules and phobias.

When you get older and have bladder issues you will see what a hassle it can be to use the bathroom.

Not everyone gets past hotel receptions that easy

Not everyone has the money to buy something every time they urinate

Not everyone can hold it for 2 hours while waiting for the Coaster train.

Everyone wants to be treated better than a dog

I’ve also gone into hotel lobbies. No one has ever stopped me. As far as buying something every time you urinate, you make it sound like you have to go do this multiple times a day.

Spending a dollar or two every now and then doesn’t seem like a big deal. However I’ve never seen anyone stopped in a hotel from using the restroom. How do they know your not visiting or meeting someone? You could be going to a restaurant inside the hotel.

No one will stop you.

I am not sure exactly of how the buildings, property and leaseholds are all figured out but there are some new (a year or so) “owners” of the building that have expressed some great plans in reworking some of the spaces so I wonder if that might have something to do with it.

I will say that we go up to LA by train once a season and while I have noted the locks on the bathrooms they have never been locked when we have been there. The bathrooms are far from great and often used by homeless (as in every station in big cities, certainly out west) so I can see why the locks are there. Like others have noted there is a Starbucks across the street and several hotels less than a block away, doesn’t seem like a big issue to me.
