In 2006 the county-wide measure was defeated. Now the Airport will continue to remain where it is. It's single runway is expected to reach capacity around 2035. No plan exists to build a 2nd runway. Where do you think the new airport would go?

They voted on a new airport probably a half a dozen times. 3rd rail in San Diego. Hope they like $400 fares to Vegas.

1. The 2006 vote was a joke. The Feds were not going to give us MCAS Miramar.

2. Since people were fired up in 2006, there was a last ditch effort to build a new airport near Boulevard CA with a high-speed train connection to the current airport. If that idea were approved, the cost and time schedule would have been a show-stopper. It would still be under construction. It's taking 10 years just to build an 11 mile extension of the trolley from Old Town to the UTC.

3. At one time, there was talk about taking NAS North Island on Coronado Island and making it an extension of our current airport. Do you really think the Navy would give up North Island?

4. At it's current location, the airport has no room for a 2nd runway. We're pretty much stuck being a one-runway beach town.

Those who would have lived near the new airport voted overwhelmingly "No" for reasons of noise and congestion.

Those who lived near the current airport voted "yes" for the move, but on two sides of the current airport the numbers of inconvenienced people are quite low: south side (the bay) & west side (small strip of Pt Loma then ocean).

For everyone else, it was probably a case of "well, I'm not actually seeing any problems with the current airport capacity, so why fix that which for me isn't obviously broken".

I agree the Navy would never have given up Coronado, but I think giving up Miramar would have happened more likely than not.

The vote was simply symbolic

"We did this before,” she said. “If [the military is] not going to give up the property, they’re not going to give up the property. You can’t have a free country without somebody protecting it. If the military says no, it’s not going to matter.”

Mayors Susan Golding, Maureen O'Conner, and the crooked city council at the time, could have sold Liberty Station to the Port authority to expand the Airport runway back in the late 90's early 2000's.
This City for the last 40 year has over and over again, "shot themselves in the foot" when it comes to progress

The old money of San Diego is in Point Loma and they made sure the airport wouldn’t have a major expansion in its current location and backed its proposed move to Miramar.

Personally I never liked the idea of it moving. It’s still one of the most, if not the most, convenient big city airports in the country. It’s always suited me just fine for wherever I needed to go.

I would love a brand new airport located at the southern edge of Miramar. Great freeway access all around, and much closer to north county.

But it will never happen. Oh well.

805 and 52 are parking lots half the day. You'd need to use that new Uber Helicopter service to get there.
