Sort of related, a couple years ago the UT did a small piece on properties within the county that sold for under $100k. None of them looked like ranches where you'd be raising cows or growing mangoes (can you even grow mangoes in SD?), but it was interesting nonetheless.

Just in case she surfaces again...
OP, just curious why you picked one of the most expensive areas in the U.S?
Maybe try FL. Or Costa Rica.

Or Yuma... and just buy the mangos.

Doesn't exist in the US.

Pretty much seeing Hawaii is the only place in the US that’s in the tropics. And while rare, they still do have tornadoes.

Pile on?

Looking back on my life the people who gave me sobering advice that I didn't want to hear are the ones who have helped me most.

Johnalt, Please tell us all where the OP should buy. We all want to know where this utopia is.

Keep in mind you’ll be paying for water a good portion of the year.

Personally I’d go to the Big Island of Hawaii if I wanted to be self sufficient. Land is way cheaper, and water falls from the sky for free year round.

Here’s two within an hour of downtown, with no traffic
