Currently making $60,000 and paying $1400 in monthly rent. Made an offer to make $63,000 from a different company in Minneapolis. What are your thoughts? Love the weather here in San Diego which is why I’m hesitant to accept. And a reason why I’m considering to accept is Minneapolis has a lower cost of living compared to San Diego.

I used to live in that part of the country. Get ready for sub zero weather, shoveling snow and scraping ice off your car.

Yeah man I hear ya. If my family wasn’t there I wouldn’t have Ben consider moving back.

San Diego, as you know, is an outdoor paradise. Once you leave, it will be extremely difficult to get back. $3K is not all that much, but with the difference in COL, it might be significant. If you enjoy winter sports, then the move might make sense. Otherwise? You can always fly back to visit the family.

[mod note] Moved from the Los Angeles forum to the San Diego forum, as the thread has nothing to do with LA and everything to do with SD. [/mod note]

Tell the Minneapolis people you want 80,000.

Ask for more money. If your goal is career Minneapolis is way better. I like the lifestyle there, it is outdoorsy. The winters are harsh though.

What is important to you?

Career growth?
Weather?
Seasons?
COL?
Proximity to Family?
Do you have significant ties here or there?

These are all personal questions that hold certain value to you.

I wouldn't make a career/job change unless I was 1) severely unhappy and/or 2)didn't result in at least a 10% pay bump. Have you expressed your salary requirements with the CO. offering?

I'm thinking MSP would have a lower cost of living, but not that much lower to justify it. There's more money there than there is here. Going to need at least 80K to justify the move. The idea of moving from coastal SoCal to a cold weather metro is to thrive and live large there.

Truth be told 60k a yr isn’t crap here in San Diego. I made that for around 10 yr here in San Diego before I found a better paying job. If I didn’t have a 2 income family, I would have been screwed here. You didn’t mention kids or wife so, 60k here In SD can stretch a little, but you still have a slightly below ave quality of life here imo.
Home Prices are definitely cheaper. Heck I might buy a summer slash retirement home here.

MPLS is a regional business center, there are a lot of big well run company HQ there. They have 3M, Honeywell, General Mills, Target among others. It’s has a lot more career opportunities for regular white collar type jobs, you don’t need to be a scientist or an engineer to make a living there. And what you get for the money in housing is 10x.
