Want to do this atleast once and wake up to ocean. I have a camper shell on my truck and think it would be pretty awesome to camp in it a night on the beach if possible. Are there any camping spots right next to the water or where I can drive/park on the beach in SD ? Thanks.

Overnight, on the beach, in San Diego? Not that I'm aware of. You should check out Rincon Parkway in Ventura County: https://www.ventura.org/parks-depart...incon-parkway/

I assume the Cardiff and Silver Strand SP overnight sites are closed for the pandemic

San Elijo seems to be open, but by reservation-only:

"San Elijo State Beach including the North Day-use Lot are open for active and passive recreation and parking and restrooms are available.
Day-use fees may be paid through the automated pay machines installed at the park.
Campgrounds are open at full capacity but visitors should expect a different camping experience:
Campsites are limited to 8 people, all from the same household unit (strictly enforced)
Courtesy passes will not be issued during this time and visitors are not permitted
Face coverings are required when unable to maintain 6 foot social distance
Campsites are sold by reservations only, walk-ins are not permitted
Group Campsite is closed until further notice and group gatherings are not permitted
For more information about camping, visit State Parks Begins Reopening Campgrounds. To make a reservation, visit www.ReserveCalifornia.com or call 800-444-7275."

Silver Strand is open but requires self-contained vehicles (i.e., with toilet). I am not aware of any camping opportunities at Cardiff (and didn't see any on the website), but my knowledge of North County is somewhat limited. The Ventura County option I mentioned is limited to RV's only, but doesn't specify self-contained vehicles and mentions that there are on-site toilets.

San Elijo but it's going to be packed. Baja but you need to go way down the coast past Rosarito. Oxnard may be the best bet. You can try to find a spot in the alleys or commercial lots of a denser beach city like Oceanside, PB, Mission etc. but that is likely to be illegal.

Baja for sure.

And if it's just one night chances are you won't be murdered.

You'll get run out and/or ticketed. Camping isn't allowed on the beaches here.

I've camped at San Onofre State Beach (closed during pandemic). Reservations for campsites may be hard to get when it opens.

Also, if you have access to military bases you may be able to camp at Camp Pendleton.
