Hi,
San Diego is a great place to live! The people here are the best! Very community orented. My suggestion is to find the nursing job first so you know where to look for a home. I recommend living as close to your jobs as possible so you can have quality time with your family. Moderator cut: real estate agent solicitations are not allowed
All the best in your move!

My wife and 2 children (9 and 4) are wanting a change of scenery. we live in a suburb of South Seattle (Federal way 20 miles s. ) and have lived here for 20 years. we are both 33 years old. My wife is from San Francisco and has been wanting to move back to Cali for along time. I am a teacher and have a 2nd job as a bartender at The Cheesecake Factory. My wife is a registered nurse. We are not to worried about jobs, but we do not make that much moneu (around 90K) I am really wanting to quit my 2nd job(bartending)but living in southern Cali is really expensive. Is it even reasonable to think that we can afford a house down there?
Key things for us. I love beach volleyball and I really want to surf.
we are a beach family at heart for sure.
1. Can we buy anything within 20 miles of downtown San Diego and the beaches around 400K
2. Is the surf any good down there?
3. How is the volleyball?
Thanks so much in advance...
1. only 90k? A nurse and teacher here combined u should be making $150k!
Yes, 400k will get you a small home, 3/2 maybe 1500 sq ft, or townhome...
2. Surf.. is good, not great.

3. Vollyball? MIssion beach area there are some courts.

Well, $400k isn't going to get you much...I mean, it's going to get you a single family house that lacks a newer feel (i.e. no granite counters, no stainless steel). If you want to live in Southern SD, closer to Mexico, it will, but that really is hitting closer to the 20 miles from downtown.

My partner and I both make about $100,000 together and can't afford a house to our liking...so unfortunately, we just fork over the $1800 a month rent (and that's for a one bedroom apt!) Sucks.

The median house price is about 400K now so you'll be able to find something, but you won't get as much house as you do in Federal Way. Also, don't forget about the state income tax, the top bracket is 9.3% but starts at only 43K. And the sales tax is nearly as high as ours in Seattle.
