Southeast is nowhere near the most dangerous in San Diego. Logan heights city heights north park Hillcrest Golden hill National city Talmage pacific beach yikes el cajon east village. It's not the poorest either but its definitely safer than every area I mentioned

Most dangerous area in SD has definitely shifted to East Village, City Heights, Gaslamp in terms of actual risk of random violence to non drug dealers. Kind of like SF where the worst parts of town are close to the tourist areas and the residential areas are quiet and safe.

With respect to the Gaslamp, that area has come full circle for me. Before Horton Plaza, before all the revitalization back in the 80s, that whole area was insanely sketchy. I recall once going to Old Spaghetti Factory and upon arriving, there was some stabbing or shooting that had just gone down, and another incident when we left. On a different occasion, friends and I walked about two blocks and were accosted by dudes just blurting out "rock", or "buy some white" as we passed. Definitely worse then, than now, even with the current slide.

Still, there are very few places in San Diego I don't feel mostly safe. I can't say that for any other big metro area in the nation but I'm of course totally biased and obviously more familiar here than anywhere else.

That area by all the cheap Padre game parking does look like a walking dead scene. I used to carry a knife then ditch it in a planter box to retrieve later outside the stadium.

I don’t know if I agree about the Gaslamp? The difference is whenever something happens there it’s front page news in the UT, and the lead-in story on tv. Violence elsewhere is usually buried in the local section, and maybe gets a blurt on tv?

Most incidents there happen late night/early am, and are almost always amongst parties that know each other, or steam from an action that night. When you factor in the thousands that converge on that area on a nightly basis the chances are minuscule something is going to happen to you unless you run your mouth at the wrong person.

This still exists except that it has been pushed out to 15th-17th street between Market and Imperial. One will encounter dope pushers when parking on the outskirts of downtown for a Padre game. The price one pays for free parking I suppose.

Sure, it's like PB, in that there are a lot of beatings and stabbings between parties in crowded areas late at night. You may end up in the wrong place / wrong time.

Yeah, but that rarely happens. I lived in MB/PB for 20+ years never more than 1-2 blocks from the boardwalk and/or Garnet, and also owned a bar for over a dozen years. I’ll say well less than 1% of anything remotely violent was towards a random stranger. Just like with the Gaslamp, when you consider there’s thousands out most nights the chances of random violence happening to you is hardly measurable.

Now if you want to test your liquid courage, can’t take no for an answer hitting on someone else’s girl, or try to be the good samaritan breaking up a fight amongst strangers, you might find yourself on the wrong end of the stick.

Just gonna leave this here:

Not disagreeing with you, but experience has taught me, it's best to just avoid these party districts after about 10pm. Too many drunk people all in the same place...
