Default 40 years too late

Moved to San Diego in the 80's. Then the traffic wasn't bad....no longer. Homeless people everywhere....especially downtown. The weather is great but just too crowded. You better be making 120k a year or you will live in a sketchy neighborhood

My vote on the poll would have been a choice that went along the lines of

"No, because I don't want to move to a city where things are going downhill."

I've lived here since 1974.

I'd say, if you are thinking of moving here - don't. Especially if you have children. SD Unified and Poway Unified are full woke. CA legislature is full woke, Herr Newsom is full woke.

Ever higher taxes, more free stuff, more govt regulations/control, crazy woke legislation.

But nice weather, with the occasional earthquake, more frequent wildfires, stricter water usage.

And - I've been here since '74. It ain't the same CA I grew up in - it's worse.

I always planned to retire to S.D. following many happy summers there. After graduating from U.C. Santa Barbara I was torn between the two locations. By the time I retired, San Diego had grown too crowded for me, and Santa Barbara, too expensive.

I retired to Maui which is less expensive than either of those two cities. I was able to afford an oceanfront condo near Kaanapali Beach and am viewing Molokai and several sailboats as I type this in my recliner, LOL!

I was in Santa Barbara last week and if I ever move back to the mainland that is where I will go.

My nephew just moved to the La Jolla area and loves it. He is 25, single, and has a master's degree in engineering (and a good job).

With a job like that he could afford to live in San Diego.

Someone who is working a minimum wage job in SD will struggle greatly. With an average rent of at least $2,000 a month in the city some people don't even earn that amount in a month.

Congrats but from my cursory glance the cost of RE in Kaanapali is similar to San Diego. I believe San Diego also has more amenities and more things to do in general. Personally, I would get island fever despite the beauty of Hawaii. If I surfed then that would be a different matter.

I don't surf (anymore) but I'm still in the ocean weekly. The water is too cold for me in California.

You can still find oceanfront/ocean view condos here for less than a $million. Much harder in San Diego or Santa Barbara.

I don't get island fever and I'm very happy with life here. To each his own.
