I grabbed my old paper rolodex, and caught some old friends in the middle of moving from Valley Center to Las Cruces NM. The were ill-prepared to retire financially here. Both are in their late 50s. Where will they get inexpensive medical insurance? Medicare starts at 65.

They sold there home in Valley Center for almost $1M. Their new Las Cruces NM home will close at less than $350k. They paid cash for their new home. Their new home in NM looks great. At $350k its a bargain.

But I think they will be bored. There not much to do in Las Cruces NM unless that go in to Mexico. Las Cruses has no airport. They must use the airport in El Paso for any long-distance travel.

Everyone Always mention The weather about San Diego, but what a lot of people don't consider is convenience to every thing. Train Station, Bus Station, Airport, hell another country 25 Mins away.
I was in New Mexico for a 14U Softball Tournament in 20 and it was hot as Balz, but scenery was Beautiful.

New Mexico is just about the last state I would choose to move to.

Went there once. I was warned to watch out for drunk indians driving pickup trucks on the local roads. Not much else to do there but drink all day I guess.

North NM is still in the rockies. It's freakin amazing! It's pretty much Colorado. The southern tip, not so much.

Las Cruces is part of the El Paso metro area, so they will use the El Paso airport. I am in the town a few times a year just passing through, doesn't look like there is much to do there but El Paso and of course Juarez are not too far. Their closest beach will be Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Mexico followed by San Diego.

But what is there to do in Valley Center? That is pretty far away from stuff. It's not like living in San Diego proper... is it? I imagine NM wouldn't be that much different.

Do you know their combined salary? If they are still working I'm not sure why they'd have trouble here, unless they are very low earners. I'm about to be 45 and I figure I'll have to do the same at some point, but I think we can stay here until I'm 65 at least.

Not much different than being surrounded by casino drunks on the dangerous local roads in Valley Center.

I've been to their home in Valley Center. Not much to do in those parts. But they did have a nice backyard with 3 cascading pools. And some nice casinos were nearby.

Probably zero. They both wanted to retire early because they hated their jobs. So they will probably be living off the proceeds of their Valley Center home sale, social security, and personal savings.

If you like the outdoors places like ABQ are insane. Hunting, fishing, hiking, cycling off the charts most of the year. If you are a couch tater and like hanging out in malls, not so much.
