Best thing to do if you like wilderness is move to a less populated area.
Exactly. And there are a lot of new people using the outdoors who don't have skills, training, or the ethic to be self-sufficient. Esp around camp fires, stoves, etc.

No "rules" stop illegals from having fires for either cooking or trying to stay warm.

Ironic, given that it was a hunter - and not an undocumented person - who caused the 2003 fire.

Not sure here, but I've seen them drop a tree strategically across forest service roads a short ways from main roads. Usually in busier spots, when there's been lot's and lot's of snow. I've always assumed it was to keep yahoos from going out and getting stuck/freeze to death. Never once have I not been able to detour around one of these blockades. Honestly, just like when the feds have to shut down the government and national parks close, it just means the ones you can access from "alternative routes" are yours for the taking if you know what you're doing. I wouldn't be upset over this closure if I still was into four-wheeling and such because it just means that much less people out there. Even if FS are out there actively enforcing it, most they're going to do is tell you to leave.

I've never believed his story that he was lost.

Buying a license doesn't make one a hunter any more than having a State ID makes you a good driver.

Oh no! Right before "FREE FISHING DAY!" (Yes, Saturday Sep. 04, 2021 is a "no license needed day" for fishing.) You'll still need to abide by all the rules & regs, but no license needed, that day.)

As you say, watch Newsome close the ocean again...
