Clairemont and Oside are both up and coming neighborhoods. If you want to be closer to OC then Oside, if you want to be closer to all of SD then Clairemont. With 1.2 million you should be able to purchase something decent. Home prices have been dropping fast and is a good time to buy if you have cash.

I visited a friend and his family in Carlsbad this summer, pretty idyllic. It's expensive though, so 1.2M may need to be stretched a bit. Having said that, your income could definitely support a more expensive home purchase if you were inclined.

Have you been to Clairemont or Oceanside? They definitely have different vibes. Clairemont is popular and generally well regarded, but I find most of it feels a bit run down compared to other parts of town. If you're used to many suburban or urban-suburban parts of the country, I think you might agree. If you don't care about proximity to downtown San Diego and the airport, I'd look at Carlsbad and Oceanside. Until the recent real estate "bump", $1.2 in Carlsbad would work well; now, it'll be tighter but doable.

Clairemont is huge. 80K people and 13 square miles. There still is some rough stuff, mostly over by Clairemont Square but there are also very nice areas. It includes Bay Park and other areas with ocean views. Houses there are multi-million. Most of it is SFH which is a big selling point for most. No apartments or businesses.

I would choose Carlsbad. Lots of houses 3-4BR in the $1.2M range and Carlsbad is beautiful and has lots of amenities (parks, pool, beaches, beautful neighborhoods, restaurants/downtown, quality landscaping everywhere, etc.

FWIW, I usually refer to Bay Ho and Bay Park as those names, leaving Clairemont for all the rest. Probably due to my not being a native to the area. My comment was referring to pretty much the rest of Clairemont. I agree that Bay Ho and Bay Park are quite nice -- basically what's between Tecolote Canyon and I5. But no way that's in their price range right now (3BR+, yard, etc). Heck, even the Mount street areas of Clairemont are pushing their range.
