Hello again all, I recently posted a thread saying that I am moving to El Cajon, however, I am now wanting to spoil myself and live 20 minutes away in downtown San Diego. I have been told to look near Horton plaza and the gaslamp district. Although I have a major shoe fetish, need a large closet, and have never had to live in something smaller than 1,000 sqft, I know that I am going to have to downgrade. So, I would love to live in like a funky loft that is located in one of those areas where I would have great neighbors (hopefully young attractive single males), great restaurants and shopping, great night life, and small rent because I will be living off a first year teacher salary. Anyways, does anyone have ideas of where I could live that would be nice and less than 1500 dollars a month? Does anyone have any great ideas for meeting young singles in San Diego? Thanks for the help!

Oh absolutely! If you want action (depends on your meaning) then the Gaslamp and it's outskirts is the place to live. I lived a few blks from Petco Park (I worked at the Omni Hotel), and I just loved it!!! You can't go wrong with Gaslamp, Horton Plaza, and even the Golden Hills area, and you'll find something in your price range too. Try to steer clear of anything right off Broadway (homeless, etc). These areas are well-policed, and as safe as you can get.

Young singles: Gaslamp is probably the best area downtown that I'm aware of. However, SD is so large, that you can meet singles anywhere in the area. Plus during Padres home games, the area is just full of energy and life!

Thanks for the tips...unfortunately I am definately more of a Dodgers fan, however, I am a girl and can learn to like both teams...especially if I can find a player from the Padres haha jk kinda! I'm glad to hear about Broadway because I definately want a place where I can feel safe walking up to at night alone. I also am worried about getting mugged or something if a place has a parking garage for residents. Basically, even though I have been out of my parents house for over 6 years now, I have always lived in a safe part of the city, always lived with roommates, and have always known several people in the city. This next move for me is a completely lonely move! I am not moving with anybody, and the only person I know in San Diego county is my grandfather and obviously he isn't going to be a party animal. I just hope I end up teaching at a school where there are a lot of other young teachers who want to go out and hang out because I am definately not the kind of person to go to a bar by myself!

The Gaslamp is a great area. In fact, most of the neighborhoods in the downtown area offer what you are looking for. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a presence of homeless people in this area. Not that I don't empathize with their situation, but it's a reality you will have to deal with, living there.

Do yourself a favor and research some of the other downtown neighborhoods, such as Little Italy, Cortez Hill, and Core, and Columbia. I believe you will find something decent in any of these neighborhoods within your desired rental range.

My favorite downtown neighborhood is Little Italy. Awesome location. As for the neighborhood demographics--if you are looking for singles--then you need to move to my neck of the woods: Pacific & Mission Beaches. This is a singles haven. Most residents here are in their late 20's and early 30's. Fun, for sure.

In any event, you should make a trip to SD and see all of the city, so you can make a more informed choice. Good luck whatever you decide.

AJ
