Hello everyone. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post. I am 30 years old, single, with no children. I will be employed as a pharmacist in California next June after graduation. I will be moving from Memphis, Tn.

As silly as it may sound, can a single person make it on a 6 figure income in San Diego?

If you were 30, single professional male, had no children, 6 figure income, hobbies consisted of the beach, working out (bodybuilding), arts, shopping, where in San Diego would you consider living?

As ralph said, there are a lot of people here not making close to 6 figures and unless you plan on moving to Rancho Santa Fe, Santa Luz or downtown La Jolla you'll do fine...in fact 6 figures on your own you'll do great.

Welcome to San Diego

Perhaps more important than the issue of salary is how much home equity you will be bringing with you. If you can bring a quarter-million to the table, you should be able to buy in.
If you have no equity, you can always rent, but might never get out of the rental market. I don't know if there is really such a thing as a "starter home" in the San Diego market anymore.

While the post above stated thier are people living on 20k a year they are mostly illegals. Unfortunately California is no longer a golden state of opportunity. You are lucky making your salary it is not the norm even for california. I left the southern claifornia area in January I could nor sustain that after a divorce in 2000 I had to eventually leave. I did not own a home and we all know what hapened to home prices out there until just recently.

I live in the south at least for now. I do miss alot of things about california but the cost of living is not one of them. Concicder yourself blessd

Home buying is for multi millionaires. You can buy a shack for about $350,000.00. Many working or middle class people are moving across the border into Tijuana, Mexcio with a commuter pass to get across the border. As in Southern California, there is a lot of burgalry. Most murders are regarding illegal drugs in California and Mexico.. In mexico a real nice home with fruit trees, patios, 2 bedrooms, inside car parking will run about $95,000 on. Rents are about $450.00. There is a lot of tree planting, new landscaping and the city of Tijuana is becoming beautiful. There are many American and Japanese factories in TJ.
