My family and I have lived on the East Coast for years and years and currently live just outside of DC. We are white, well-educated (Masters), and lean a tad to the right (politically speaking). We are used to rough commutes and high prices.
We are looking for a better quality of life - including better (warmer, less rain, much less humidity) weather year-round, a place that is less focused on work, work, work all the time, and something close to the water. Looking for very good schools (we live in a GREAT school district now, which may be hard to find elsewhere), a super family friendly neighborhood that embraces newcomers is comprised of people similar to us.
Love SD and wondering if it is for us, and, if so, which neighborhoods. What would $800,000 buy in terms of a house? Any other recommendations of cities/towns to live in?

From what you've described I think you would really enjoy living in San Diego. The weather is definately superior (year round) and there is more of a laid back feeling here. More emphasis on quality of lifestyle than work, work, work! My dh takes frequent business trips to D.C. and is always commenting on the suit and tie in 100+ degree humidity and how everyone is a workaholic there. He could make significantly more $ in D.C. but he wants to stay put for now, he's enjoying San Diego too much. 800K should buy you a nice home, especially now with all the foreclosures, you should be able to have your pick. I recently went house hunting in La Costa and they have quite a few foreclosures up there as well. We found many homes in the 600K-800K range. Schools, we have some truly great schools and some bad ones too. You just have to be careful before you buy. Research online or you could pick up the San Diego county edition of the McCormick guide. It gives a great snapshot of each area of San Diego county.
