You're just too close to the coast. For those of us a little inland, this is a great summer - - sun without being oppressive and great sleeping weather! Whenever I go to Fiesta Island this summer, I'm never prepared. It's beautiful until SDSU or Mission Valley and then I hit a wall of marine layer!

I'm teasing my family that I'm going to buy big bags of dog food and throw it out there every day to domesticate those Coyotes.
From what I am reading, feeding them just makes them less fearful of humans, which makes them come in closer to humanized areas, which puts pets and people more at risk. They are wild animals with high prey drive and hunting instincts. They will eat dog food, but that will not keep them from hunting. They need a healthy fear of people...so scaring them away is a better way to go. I know this is not the popular way to think about wildlife. But romanticizing wildlife is not the way to go either.

I live in Northpark area...Boundary St...

Yesterday morning at 0730, my mini dachshund puppy was taken into the ravine (from my yard) where I heard her yelping/crying. A backyard neighbor (across the ravine) saw a coyote with my puppy in it's mouth. Please, watch out for your little ones, fix any holes in your gate, do not feed animals from your yard. I'm new to the area and had absolutely NO idea coyotes were in this area. I hope this tragic and unfortunate event can help save someone else's pet.

Animal control services in San Diego is worthless...don't waste your time calling them.

I'm sorry that this happened to your puppy, but your neighbors should have warned you about coyotes, and leaving your dog unattended. I have a friend that lives in Escondido, and the coyotes come right up into her yard and look in the glass doors at her dogs and cats.

I'm also in North Park, but I'm not near any ravines or canyons, so they don't come around my area.

Default So sorry

So sorry for your loss! I have two long-haired Mini-Doxies myself. We live two blocks from Telocote Canyon and saw a coyote walking down our street two weeks ago. We only let the dogs in our yard while we are out there supervising them.

In Bay Park where I live (above Mission Bay) and near the canyon I saw signs a few months ago that someone had lost two Dachshunds to Coyotes. This happened several blocks from the canyon.

Everyone please be careful as small dogs often think they are large and don't realize the danger. If you are within six blocks of a canyone you need to guard your dogs and cats. Don't let them out without supervision.

It's pretty safe to say every street in SD has had one walk down it at some time. Keep your critters and pet food indoors and you will be ok.

Coyotes walk right down the streets in Laguna Hills. Wait at the light for it to turn green on Alicia. Live in the brush throughout LHills. They are brazen. Will walk right toward you. They come into yards, look into houses, grab small animals, eat from pet food bowls. Very dangerous.
