Has anybody seen/had any run-ins with coyotes in San Diego County? Three months ago I moved from Pacific Beach to Spring Valley. I had heard of some coyote attacks out in Alpine/Vista/mountain areas and wasn't sure how far inland the sighting would go.

Well last night around 12:15 am I saw what was either a very thin and tall german shephard or a rather large coyote jogging down the middle of my street on Dictionary Hill.

Anybody have any coyote encounter stories in SD? I have a 4-month-old puppy and now I'm getting leery about leaving her in our backyard.

We've seen 2 in our neighborhood within the past 2 months... one of them walking right down the street on a saturday morning. I live in the middle of the city in a heavily canyoned neighborhood.

They are definitely out there. We're out in Eastlake so we're really in thier territory. I've seen them sparingly but we hear them pretty frequently and defintely hear the hysterics when they're getting thier dinner.
If you know they are in your area I would definitely keep an eye on your pup.

I live in 4S ranch and we hear them frequently and on occasion see them. I've heard of a few people having their cats fall victim to attacks, so I agree, keep an eye on your puppy.

Default Coyote - Dog Attacks

I'm considering moving into the El Cerrito area on a canyon with three beagles. Has anyone ever heard of coyotes attacking grown dogs? I know they can attack cats, puppies and smaller dogs. Need some input since it has been a long time since I have lived near coyotes (moving back from Texas).

Thanks.

I live very nearby and the city coyotes I see are straggly, skinny, and a large dog like a German Shepherd could easily take them out (but they can certainly do some damage). I don't see a beagle having any chance.

Keep in mind that coyotes often hunt in packs. So even if they are smaller than your medium to large breed domesticated dog, they could potentially cause some major, if not fatal, damage.

Default Hmmm...

Sounds like it may be best to avoid canyon areas with all dogs, correct?

There have been some stories recently of some brazen coyotes doing some crazy stuff around here. One coyote chased a dog through a dog door and ran into the house itself. Luckily, the homeowner was there and chased it right back out.

I guess a lot would depend how good your fence was. I don't think coyotes are supposed to be able to jump real well, so a solidified fence would probably be okay - - may need to be a high priority for the properties that you look at.

yeah some of my neighbors puppies have been eaten by coyotes so i recommend leaving a gate or not leaving ur puppy outside at all
ive run into 1 and chased it down with my car and it was a pure adrenaline rush
that coyote was darting like a horse and i just gassed my pedal but of course he went to go hide in some bushes =p
