What areas would you consider Fire Insurance to be a necessity? Are there any places that get hit pretty regularly with fires?

Anywhere in California. It's very dry here. Even if you own an apt., I would not trust my neighbors remembering to turn off the stove.

I'd say get it no matter where you live here, despite what people will tell you the fires aren't limited to just the back country. People lost homes in many different parts of San Diego County in 03 & 07. So the insurance certainly wouldn't hurt.

If you're west of the 5, I wouldn't get it. I felt pretty safe from the last fires living in Pacific Beach. East of the 5, I'd say anything is possible.
