Since this thread has to do with design, does anyone have an opinion on the new downtown civic center proposal? I like it. It reminds me of R2D2, but it's just the type of architecture downtown needs to make it more visually interesting.

Whether the city should invest money into it at this time is debatable. Thoughts?

Anyone heard of the plans for Horton Plaza? What happened to that? Weren't they supposed to redevelop the steet facing portions and try to make the mall less walled in from the vibrant Gaslamp district.

I don't know anything about opening Horton Plaza onto 4th Avenue, but there definitely needs to be more integration between it, and all of the bustling nightlife and restaurants on 5th Avenue. At night, particularly on weekends the Gaslamp is absolutely packed, yet if you go just a half a block down a side street towards 4th Avenue, (or towards 6th Avenue) all that activity just falls off a cliff. What you are left with is a 5th Avenue that is actually too busy, and which would actually benefit from LESS foot traffic, and a 4th Avenue which desperately needs it. Moving some of the Gaslamp entertainment business onto the side streets and 4th Avenue, and then integrating Horton into the pedestrian circulation pattern would be another big win for the commercial health of Downtown.

If that's a fair representation, I don't really like it. It still seems a bit too boxy and squat to really make a statement that impresses me. Yes, it has that funky looking bulge, but to me it still too closely resembles a plain ole' glass box. Been there - Done that - 5 million times all over the country.

Can't someone come up with SOMETHING other than another derivative on the glass box?

BTW, SDurb, I love how you are able to always come up with the architectural drawings of all the proposed buildings for Downtown. That sure makes discussions like this one easier to have.

I'm not crazy about the new Civic Center design, I guess maybe b/c I prefer civic centers/city hall's to have a classic traditional design like SF's City Hall. But anything is better than that sorry piece crap cluster of buildings we call a Civic Center right now and I like it somewhat and would support it being built.

But what I really what to see is the Navy complex redeveloped more that anything else, I am so sick of these do nothing NIMBY's always standing in the way of progress; nitpicking at every damn detail as if they had a better alternative, which they don't. Or all those that say it should be a park but don't actually want to pay for it. Granted Douglas Manchester may not be the nicest or most caring developer around but the Hyatt looks a lot better than the parking lots that used to be there and this proposal looks a hell of a lot better than what is there now. Just build the damn thing already....

I say, start constructing a new downtown. One where theres no Height limit to construction and can be the official business district of San Diego city. Also, a rail station connecting it to all areas of the city and universities. For the time being.

San Diego doesnt have crucial problems like other larger cities.

I am irritated by the poor development east and west along the 52, especially going into deserted Miramar. I understand that its reserved for the military, I just don't know if it is necessary to not allow development off the 15 and 52 freeways in that area. The US government controls too many patches of undeveloped and underdeveloped land in san diego county, I actually find it ludicrous. as for coronado, more then half the island is military, and that is PRIME land! the military even has the tip of point loma, more prime land! It seems like more than any other city, san diego citizens are blocked of by more 'no trespassing' zones. I understand that the US government pours in a lot of money into san diego in order for them to operate here, I'm just saying...

There were plans in 1999 to have a line extending from downtown toward Sea World, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, etc. It was to have been built by 2009. It never got off the ground though as they thought there wasn't enough interest.

You can see more about the future extensions here:
San Diego Trolley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Most though are on hold as they don't see enough interest by the public.
