So I just purchased a property here in San Diego, moving here from Denver. My lawn is in bad shape, its all yellow. I am going to fertilizer but wondering if you aerate here in San Diego and if you do is it okay to aerate right now or is there a season? I want to put fertilizer down but if I need to aerate, I need to wait until after aeration....i just dont know if i need to aerate or not? Any advice?

It all depends. The soil here is clay so it wicks up water. If your lawn is brown / yellow it is either dead from being underwatered or has too much nitrogen (often from not bagging the clippings). If you want to keep a lawn green in San Diego it takes a lot of water. I would fertilize and get the water situation figured out now, watch for about a month, see how it looks. If it's still thrashed at that point you might want to thatch it, aerate, and re-seed.

Well back in Denver, there is clay in the soil too, so they say aerate. I'm ready to put fertilizer down now but want to decide whether to aerate first or not....yeall my lawn is pretty yellowish with a few green spots. I'll keep watering and probably fertilize soon then. Thankx.

I would fertilize first. I have over 1000sf of green lawn and have never aerated it, but thatch raking and overseeding every year really helps.

With water prices going up, I'd think about xeriscaping.
