If you are not sure of what area of San Diego you want to live in yet, then I definitely would not buy a house right away.

I would first find a house for rent in any neighborhood that seems suitable, and rent it for 6 months or a year.

Then while you are living there, you will have a chance to explore all of San Diego to see exactly what type of neighborhood makes the most sense for you and your family.

Why lock yourself into a house purchase before you really know where you want to live? You may buy in one area, and then regret it because you didn't give yourself a chance to see what else was out there.

San Diego County is huge, and has lots of different types of neighborhoods to live. Some are near the coast, some are inland, some have better school districts, some have better weather. You need to see what will work best for your family.

Home prices will likely either stabilize or continue to fall over the next year, so I don't think there is a real need to rush into a home purchase.

And while living in your rental house, you will have plenty of opportunity to drive around and look at homes for sale all over San Diego County. You can also talk with residents of the different neighborhoods and get their opinions of the area.

San Diego Craigslist is a good place to find home rentals. Here is a link:
