Why is a scooter more a death wish than a regular bike?

Because you are out in the traffic lane while bikes are in the bike lanes. I'd opt for a battery assisted bicycle if I were you. Cycling is still dangerous but at least they get used to seeing them in the bike lanes. Most scooter pilots don't have motorcycle experience so those numbers are going to be pretty large.

Nothing torques me off more than seeing a scooter driver in the bike lanes dedicated for bikes and joggers.

California drivers are some of the worst I've seen. They love to tailgate, speed, and change lanes at the last minute without using turn signals.

I would never take a chance driving a scooter here.

All it takes is one traffic accident on a scooter to either permanently disable you or kill you.

I would say motorcycles are less risky than scooters because motorcycles can go faster than cars when they need to. They have extremely fast pick up, and they can speed up when needed to avoid an accident.

Thanks guys...I know one minor accident to a scooter, the chance of of having broken bones are very high or even death is possible, whereas in a car, it's almost non-existent. I have to rethink this.

If you want to become road-kill thats the quickest way !

Its bad enough driving a motor vehicle with the "protective" metal around you on our streets and freeways.

But if you want to drive an "un-armored" open vehicle like a scooter you'll have no protection at all.

Keep your car !

Ive been riding a scooter (In RIC Virginia) for the last two months and it can get a bit shady at times. I love the switch due to the close prox I am to everything. But I get scared sometimes. lots of fun to ride though!!! 115 miles a gal too...

Having lived and driven in CA for quite a while now (my whole life ) there's no way I'd use a scooter to get around on real city streets. Unless I wanted to die.

A motorcycle is almost as bad, except at least there you have some acceleration power to get out of the way!! if need be.

Truth be told, even smaller cars (VW, Honda) are sometimes in danger of being run over by SUVs - personal experience! - so a scooter is only safe if you drive it in your yard.

Maybe in a less hectic town, but not here.
