Greetings!
My husband and I are considering relocating to the Northern suburbs of San Diego from Seattle. We both telecommute so distance/traffic not really an issue. One of the reasons I'm moving is because of my asthma. I'm looking to see if anyone has advice as to who northern suburbs would be best as far as air quality. We're pretty open, looking to live in that not-right-on-the-beach but not too far inland kind of area...and we're looking primarily at condos and townhomes because of price (looking to spend around $1300-1500/a month on rent, but we're flexible.)
Any advice appreciated!
Thanks!

Most areas along the coast would have best air quality (Carlsbad). I don't think the inland areas are too bad in general, but on very hot days might not be great. It's definitely not LA though- air quality isn't that bad.

Thanks JakeDog! Anyone want to throw out any more (relatively affordable) communities around the area with better air than right in the city?

Escondido is a nice town. Though it's not by the beach. Still a small drive to the beach won't hurt.

Check out Carlsbad. In particular, the La Costa area. It is approx 4-5 miles from the coast.

Thanks Fishin-Pol and JakeInSoCal! Much appreciated! Specifics are really helpful, since I'm not all that familiar with the areas yet.

Poway is an affordable and nice location. It gets warm though. You can go farther north and have fewer people/few cars on the road and smaller rent. All are not too close to the ocean though, 20 minute drive at least.

I rent in a complex in Carlsbad off Jefferson street--at $1550/month it is a 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath, 1-car garage--lives like a townhouse. (We pay an extra $25 for an additional parking spot and another $25 for the cat ) It's not perfect, but we like it and can't beat the location (can walk to shops, food & the beach, weekly farmers markets, etc). We regularly walk to Carlsbad Village (google Carlsbad Village Drive and follow it to the water) and it is my dream to rent a little office space there and be able to do all of those things on my lunch....

Not sure how severe your asthma is, but San Diego air is generally pretty clear. (I have asthma and haven't had many problems here.) The only time the air has bothered me is during the wildfires, but I was in about the best place you could be both times... Temperatures don't drop low enough here to be bothered by cold air (one of my triggers). Some of the older places (or those really close to the water) can have issues with mold, so that's something to look out for.

I think you'll be fine--in terms of asthma--wherever you end up here. Since San Diego has communities with distinctly different feels, you might give that some consideration, too. Oh--and maybe check the local allergen/pollens, too, since asthma and allergies tend to go hand in hand.

Thanks so much SomeThings (I'd love to know the name of your rental community if you don't mind sharing - I'm not sure if you can see my e-mail on this board, or I'd ask you to e-mail me!) Sounds like you have the perfect setup we are looking for!

And Bradleynova, thanks to you too - Poway is on our list but seems to have been attacked by fires a couple of times, being close to forests?

I appreciate everybody's help!

My asthma is very mild so I wouldn't know how the air here would affect you on a regular basis, but please be aware that any wildfires are VERY rough on asthmatics. I cannot leave my house until the air is clear (which is sometimes more than a week). I've lived here for 5 years and we have had 2 horrible wildfire emergencies during that time. I couldn't even leave my house to walk my dog. The bad air drifts all the way to the coast. We stayed in Oceanside last year when we were forced from our home by a nearby fire and my car was covered in ashes.
Also, if you are a Seattlite who enjoys that city's cultural offerings such as independent movie theater, music scene, restaurants, bookstores and libraries, then North San Diego county will definitely disappoint. Plan on driving up to L.A. on a regular basis for a bit of culture. But if you're coming here for the beach and mild climate, you'll love it.
