Hi everyone! This is my first post . My husband will be working in Carlsbad and I will be working at Kaiser SD. Where should we rent(somewhere in the middle I'm sure) where neither of us will have a horrible commute? He will be leaving for work at 7am and returning at 5pm. I will be working nights where I need to be there at 6:30pm and will be leaving at 7:30am.

Tall order, I know. But if anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it. We're from the midwest where there is little to no commute, ever.
But also little to no fun, ever Looking forward to the move!

I'd say somewhere in UTC area (5-805-52 triangle) or even in Clairemont (south of 52).

Your husband will have an easy commute (for the most part), going against the flow of traffic. On the other hand, you will be standing in traffic both ways. So you want to live closer to Kaiser than to Carlsbad if you want to spend equal times in traffic. Another thing of concern is that southbound onramps of 805 at Mira Mesa / Miramar / Nobel Dr are all backed up at 6 pm, it could take 10 min just to get on the freeway. So you'd probably want to live on Governor Dr. or further south.

Default Southbound ramps

What if I were to work a day shift? Would the commute (from Sorrento Valley to Kaiser around 6am) be better or worse? And what about around 7:30pm coming home?

There's not that much work traffic at those times. You can use Google and look at historical traffic maps.

I'm not sure where Kaiser SD is, since there are many locations. Is this one near downtown?
