Alright, I've got a question. How in the hell does someone have a hard time living on 100k, even with a wife and two kids. I grew up in San Diego, and my Mom was a stay-at-home mom, and my father made 95k/year and had my Mom, me, and my brother to support. We were able to live in a very nice house and go out to eat once or twice a week, and we weren't living paycheck to paycheck. If you're having issues with living here on 100k, than your problems, as stated before, are greater than SD's COL.

When you have a 3k/mo mortgage, spend 500/mo on health insurance.... it gets tight.

Your father made 95k/yr in what year? It's not 1978 anymore. Ever look at the monthly nut on a very nice house in San Diego?

That's not news. I'm not willing to choose Chula Vista. I would rather leave. I accept that as a sacrifice I am willing to make.

Hope you get that job though, so you can stay in SD!

Which Mission Hills school are you referrring to? Florence more in Hillcrest is mediocre. Grant is actually in the top 10 elementary (and now K-8) schools in all of SD unified, on the level of Torrey Pines, etc, when looking at test API scores. It is a math/science magnet with enrichment in these areas. Many (affluent) families have switched from private schools to Grant in MH. There are tradeoffs in all decisions, but one can find a reasonable balance if one tries.

900k for a house in Mission Hills isn't a tradeoff I can make.

I have Rolando Elementary and Hearst within a mile of my house, which are both 10-rated schools.

It's a combination of tradeoffs - house, schools. Those are big areas to make tradeoffs. Trading off weather is less of a sacrifice than those other areas.

I live avec family in MH and why is Grant not an acceptable public school option till 8th grade? Granted high school is more challenging, but High Tech High and the International High are options.

Fair enough and agree. Rent - not a good long term option if you can afford otherwise elsewhere.

Grant is fine, but what about middle and high school? If I am going to drop 900k I don't want to put my kids on a lottery for high school. And International might be a good program, but it's still sitting in gang-infested SD High campus.

Grant is both an elementary and middle school which is nice. True about high school - you're on target. Being a renter b/c of that figure, moving is more possible in 6 years from now, if necessary. BTW, still expensive, but you can get a decent MH home for <600K with yard, craftsman, etc - I know I've seen 'em. Yes the best ones are ~900K or more - tradeoffs...

I own a home... I hate renting. No more renting for me.
