There was an article in the UT this morning regarding a woman who panhandles to get enough for her daily dose of vodka. She lives on the streets and appears to be mentally ill and is an addict by her own admission. She considers the people who give to her to be showing unconditional love. She is afraid of getting DTs if she does not get her daily dose of alcohol.

you know what!! All of you are a$$holes!!! I've lost my job, unemployment DOES NOT last a year and a half...doesn't even last a year...it lasts ONLY six months!!! I have a mortgage, two children, utilities, I DO have food stamps and I DO have cash aid...you know what ...food stamps are $490 for a family of 4 and cash aid is $610. I DO NOT live beyond my means but the home that I purchased has a mortgage of $1000 per month....WHy??? because the job I held (when they closed the doors) was paying me $60k per year...and I COULD afford it!!! But now cash aid doesn't even cover my mortgage let alone utilities and such. Forget my credit card, I had to STOP paying that all together. I do not have a rich family member nor do I have a savings account. I've had to panhandle just to make ends meet because all the programs in the world don't cover everything.

I usually panhandle in fashion valley and YES I DO drive myself there....my car was bought AND PAID OFF before I lost my job....are you telling me I should take a bus just to appease all of you??? I'm out there everyday to support my kids and NO WONDER I get dirty looks because of people like you!!! '

I do not sleep....when I get home from fashion valley and take care of my kids and lay them to bed I spend the ENTIRE NIGHT applying for jobs on various job boards and websites and I've been on 15 interviews....there's to many people competeing for the same jobs!! before I moved here from florida I'd NEVER gone on an interview that I did not get an offer on....but here in san diego it's not like that.

you people ASSUME money is for drugs and alcohol but REALLY think about this $hit.... or better yet, walk in my shoes...maybe then you'll give spare change. I've never touched a drug and haven't had a drink in over 15 years....not that I was an alcoholic but even a social drink!!!

If true, you're in a minority. The majority are scam artists. I was driving on Rosecrans last week and sone guy had a sign that said "need money for weed".

A coworker gave money to a panhandler on the way out of work one day. She saw the same woman at the Barona casino that weekend playing slots.

As many people here said, there are all kind of services available. Based on my experience and what I've heard from friends and coworkers, I wouldn't give anyone a penny. I'd rather donate to Father Joes.

You are not helping your cause. If you had read the thread most of us support those down on their luck. It's the losers that are tricking good people out of their money that are the problem. I haven't heard of many people with assets gutsy enough to beg. Good luck in your search for a job.

This country does not owe you money. Nor do the taxpayers. The United States is a whopping $17 trillion in debt, and California is one of the most deeply indebted states in the nation. Go yell at the government and the tens of millions of people whose sole job is welfare, foodstamps, and WIC. Millions and millions of people who breed without skills, resources, or a plan to provide. Welcome to entitlement state, and sister, this ship is sinking.

Also: don't have kids you can't afford. The honest truth, and harsh reality, is the planet is grossly overpopulated. For anyone reading this: the planet needs neither your genes nor your offspring. A global battle for resources (food, water, energy) is just beginning. Gas-rich Crimea in the Ukraine; separatists seizing oil fields in Iraq; jihadists in Libya; unrest in the OPEC countries; China and its extra-terratorial skirmishes with Japan and Vietnam; and the mother of them all -- the global superpowers who are about to carve up the Arctic and the vast fossil fuel riches that lie beneath.

You should have thought about these critical issues before spawning carbon-based units. Much has been written about overpopulation, debt, resource shortages. But most Americans don't read. Most don't think. And Americans are laughably bad at math and finance. See NINJA (no income, no job, no asset) mortgages and the 2007-2008 housing implosion; morons buying $750,000 homes on $50,000 salaries, never reading the closing documents and not having even a thought about LIBOR, adjustable rates, or balloon payments. Sloppy thinking is de riguer, as exhibited in your poorly written excrement, replete with poor grammar, punctuation, and not a single original thought, if you've ever had one beyond your holier-than-thou grandstanding.

Life is all about choices. You've made yours, ill-advised as they may be. No wonder your family is suffering.

It is rough and has been worse. I feel sad for people like the woman here down on her luck and angry about it. Kids mortgages, we are all in one way or another just skating. Even with $$ in the bank the systems takes a powder and whose letting you get to it then?

Somehow the only thing I can do is to remain with a pass on many of these folks at street corners. I don't give money. I work far to hard for it. I find it intrusive to be approached when I am trying to focus on driving. I don't really want a stranger asking me for money at my car window. That is to close to me and mine. It's like a family member who you know is a user showing up at your door unexpectedly.

I make no judgment. But I don't give.

Most of us have walked in your shoes in one way or another so it's particularly difficult to empathize with your plight. You have NO idea the road we've been down. NONE. You don't want to be judged? Neither do I.

She made 60k a year with a $1000 a month mortgage.
I'm no financial expert, but it sounds to me you were living above your means.

maybe w/2 kids but 1k mortgage on 60k is easily doable. I'd expect her to pay more in rent honestly
