We will be moving to SD in a few months and will be working just east of the 5/805 merge and just north of Mira Mesa Blvd. We are a mid-50's lesbian couple with no children living at home. We lean more towards artsy/historic areas vs defined subdivisions/strip malls/kid-friendly areas. We will rent a year before buying and want to find a rental house/townhouse/condo with a good commute to work. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

You might like Hillcrest, University Heights or Little Italy.

Thanks for the tips! I have been watching the live traffic cams to try to get an idea of the amount of congestion in the different areas, but it really helps to have info from someone with direct knowledge of the area!

Any thoughts about whether it would better (traffic-wise) to live north, south or east of the area I will be working in (East of 5/805 merge, just above Mira Mesa Blvd).

Thanks again!

The Sorrento Mesa / MM Blvd area is high-traffic. No escaping it north or south. The onramp to 805 at MM Blvd backs up 4 lanes for a mile every day.

About your only option if you really want to avoid traffic would be La Jolla or Del Mar($$$) or Mira Mesa ($). Depending on your budget La Jolla is very charming. Mira Mesa is the antithesis of charming and is prototypical late 60's suburban strip-sprawl. If you want artsy you will most likely have to live in the city where you can expect about a 40+ minute commute. I do it every day.
