I will be moving from KY to work in USCD in May. I would appreciate help about which areas are the best to live in. I will be working a post-doc so rent would have to be capped off at ~ 700-900$

There is grad housing on campus, you may look into that. UTC (the area just around UCSD) is pretty expensive, there are a lot of students in that area. You should be able to find a studio for that price but it will be pretty modest. You also shouldn't rule out getting a roomate.

Our summers will feel much more pleasant than the ones you have experienced in Kentucky, and winter as well.

I commuted to UCSD from Clairemont. That worked ok, and can be done without getting on the freeway if the traffic reports are really bad. Can't say that Clairemont is very inspirational though. And don't know what the rents are like any more either.

I will look into the housing in Clairemont. I am taking up Sassberto's suggestion and looking out for roomamates.
Are there areas to avoid?

Everyone commutes to UCSD from virtually all directions since UCSD is right off the I-5, Torrey Pines Rd and nearby Genessee.

From the north, there's Carmel Valley, Del Mar, La Costa and Encinitas. They're pricey and would be hard to maintain on a student's salary.

Eastward is Mira Mesa, Sorrento Mesa, Poway, Los Penasquitos and Scripps Ranch. Tons of UCSD students live in these communities due to the fact that housing is more affordable. Access to UCSD is simple, use the 56 fwy to the I-5, Mira Mesa Blvd or Miramar Rd/La Jolla Village drive to get to class.

South is University City, Clairemont Mesa, Linda Vista, Kearny Mesa, Downtown, etc. Similar to Mira Mesa above but older, more dense, more character, with easy accessability options by car.

Default UCSD Commute

Hello,

Are you still looking for a place? I am renting a room in the Mira Mesa area and was wondering if you'd be interested...

Thanks!
