Do you mean 2011? Anyway if you are bothered by noise but like proximity to downtown, consider Cortez Hill. It is a downtown neighborhood adjecent to Little Italy, Bankers Hill and downtown core. it is about 8 minutes to the airport (driving) Bus not too terribly far away. We rented a condo there and LOVE it. It is actually pretty quiet. The planes fly just to the north so if you had a north facing unit, you could run into noise possibily. I would say it is never to loud to disrupt conversation. I have never heard rowdy party noises or trains.

There appears to be a variety of price ranges judging from what I see from strolling the neighborhood-simple apartments to uppscale condos. We rented a place without seeing it first in person which is pretty scary, but we could not have done better had we been here.

I think there are many other good areas to live in that are a reasonable commute from downtown and you don't necessarily have to live downtown. Before I moved here I looked at some complexes that were actually condo complexes where they couldn't sell the condos so were renting them out --sorry I can't remember the names of them anymore but they were nice places. Anyway, when walking around downtown at least in the areas where these complexes were, there was a total void of anything nearby and a LOT of homeless people. It was kind of strange, tons of office buildings and tons of homeless people. Maybe if I knew my way around downtown I would've found my way to areas where there were stores, bars, restaurants etc but it seemed like there was nothing like that nearby....
If I were you I would look in Hillcrest or Mission Valley. Also if you have 2 cars, a lot of the places downtown only give you 1 parking spot.
