We (26 year old male and 24 year old female) will be traveling to san digo this comming saturday through monday. We would like to chcheck out the city because we are considering moving there. Are there any fun events etc going on that we could check out? Any places we should stop and see? Our goal is to have fun and get a taste of the city at the same time.
Thanks for the help!

Zach

Here are some ideas that are off the beaten path.

1. La jolla Cove
2. Trails at Torrey Pines state reserve
3. Rent a sailboat and sail around the bay
4. See Sunny Jim at the la jolla cave store (many stairs down to a cave system with a grotto at the bottom)
5. The view from Mt. Soledad
6. sea world is a lot of fun...as is the zoo. I think you can get a dual ticket.

Here is another list to go along with aacole's:

1. Balboa Park - historic Spanish Colonial architecture buildings, lots of museums (Timken Museum is always free from what I hear)
2. Little Italy for an authentic Italian dinner, I highly recommend the restaurant Buon Appetito (Review on Yelp! Buon Appetito - Little Italy - San Diego, CA 92101)
3. La Jolla - La Jolla Cove & downtown La Jolla, La Jolla Shores beach
4. Gaslamp to bar hop and party on Friday or Saturday night (can be a bit of a rough crowd though, I personally prefer to go instead to a house club in Old Town, Spin Club at 2028 Hancock http://www.yelp.com/biz/spin-san-diego... this is where locals go, not so much tourists! -or- BASIC in the East Village neighborhood of downtown. It has Free Cover, info in Yelp! http://www.yelp.com/biz/basic-san-diego)
5. Walk around Downtown - Horton Plaza Shopping Mall, the area around the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is nice
6. Walk around Hillcrest, San Diego's LGBT neighborhood, like the Castro in SF or Chelsea in NYC, but less uppity
7. Get some Asian food or boba on Convoy St. (the "new China/Asia town" of San Diego), I recommend eating at Spicy City Schezwan Cuisine, Yelp! Review: http://www.yelp.com/biz/spicy-city-c...rant-san-diego

The San Diego Weekly Reader is a free publication that lists events and is fairly comprehensive. You can access the web version here: San Diego Reader | San Diego's Guide to local events, music, restaurants, news and more!

And finally, visit my blog to see videos of places in San Diego, including some I mentioned above:

I can vouch for Spicy City if its the same one I am thinking of. Did it used to be called Beijing Spicy City? They used to have weird hours, but it was wonderful

Staff didn't speak much english and the english menu is not nearly as good as the chinese one. Very authentic.

Yeah, a lot of the places on convoy are like that with staff who hardly speak English but which serve some of the most authentic ethnic food you'll ever find. It's one of the nice things about living in San Diego.

Oh, I can also confirm Buon Appetito is very good and authentic northern Italian style cooking.

I love convoy st. Its not pretty at all. In fact its one big ugly strip mall, but the endless asian restaurant options are amazing!!

Some highlights
Jasmine Seafood Restaurant - bad service, amazing food
Dumpling Inn - well spoken staff, good "homey" food, consistent
Emerald Seafood - Great chinese food, good staff, good dimsum!!

What to visit: it depends on what you like and how much money you want to spend. People visiting SD always visit the San Diego Zoo (it is "world famous") though as a local, I go there less and less. If you are interested in easy hiking with great view, I recommend Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. If you like theme parks, try Legoland. Hotel Del Coronado is always busy with tourists (City of Coronado). All the San Diego Beaches (http://www.san-diego-travels.com/beaches.html - broken link) are nice, but if I was to pick one, I would try La Jolla Cove. Though it is winter, so you won't be able to swim (too cold).

Forget downtown. North County is where it's at. La Jolla is stunning, Torrey Pines, believe it or not, is even more breath taking. Take a drive up 101 from La Jolla through the beach communities, take a walk at the lagoon between Solana Beach and Cardiff.

North of La Jolla is much more scenic. Sure, Balboa Park and the Zoo are great...but N. SD is much better.

Beaches: Torrey Pines, La Jolla Cove, Swamis, Self Realization Fellowship is a must:

And you want to go to downtown after looking at this? It's in Encinitas on 101....
