Hot water is the only real way to deal with the pain. Make it as hot as you can stand it.
on a scale 1 to root canal, how bad is the pain?

While walking in the water today at Fiesta Island, I saw my first ray swimming away. It was a small one - - maybe eight inches in diameter.

Has anyone had their dog step on one? What would you do in that situation?

I used to think the whole stingray thing was overrated and that there were not really that many of them until I actually started paying attention when I was at the beach a few years ago- the are everywhere -hundreds - at least on the sandy beaches - I couldn't believe how I had missed them before. I have never been stung -knock on wood- though. I would say avoid the whole Baywatch lifeguard running into the ocean thing at all costs.

I remember swimming near a kid who got stung at Seal Beach when I was young. He didn't know what happened but started screaming. Everyone thought he saw a shark and panicked. When I saw his foot I didn't go back into the water for a while. I've body surfed\ swam from Pacific Beach [even Coronado] to Malibu and have never encountered a sting ray and hope I never do.

The pain is extremely intense for the first hour. Maybe a 10?

And that is while your foot is soaking in the hot water.

Your foot is throbbing the entire time.

Then after an hour, the pain gradually goes away.

You know you've been stung by a stingray, because you will feel a sharp jab or poke in your foot, and you will likely see blood dripping from the wound.

I was stung in PB around 50 yards into the water, which was around waist deep.

Then after the lifeguards had me soak my foot for an hour, I went to a doctor, and he cleaned the wound to make sure no part of the stinger was left inside, and he also gave me a tetanus shot.

You usually hve to apply ice cold beer internally to counter the hot water too, I forgot that part.
