Insurance limits what a landlord can do. For example my insurance agent said if I have a pit bull my insurance policy would be void!

I love Pitties! We want to adopt one when after we move. We had an amazing shelter dog, Gloria.. She was a pit rottie mix. So great with my daughter!
Just give it another ten years. They'll probably move on to another breed. No matter how much you try to educate.. there are some people who will never open up their minds. It's too bad. Life is good!

Dr. Torquenstein... Do you rent right now? Just curious b/c one thing we are looking for is a rental that does not have breed restrictions. We don't mind getting renters insurance if we have to.

I assume you're talking about dogs or cats.. so let's see here... could it possibly have something to do with fur and hair everywhere, possible urine and doo-doo stains, things getting scratched and damaged, bad animal smells, neighbors being annoyed by barking, outdoor grassy areas being used as toilets, fleas in carpets and drapes, etc., etc.
If I owned rental properties, I would not allow pets *or* smoking based on the damage I know they can cause. Bummer, huh?

yes, it took me 2 months to find a place that would allow my pitbull...what worked for me was bringing the dog to the owner and letting her see how friendly she is. that worked like a charm. my dogs remain outside and are not allowed inside.

People who love dogs think of them as their children: they let them sleep on the bed, they let them sit on the sofa, they let them eat off your plate, they let them kiss (lick) your face.

People who don't love dogs cannot image why you would let your pet do that stuff. Dogs don't wear shoes when they go outside, they don't wipe their bum after pooping, they don't brush their teeth everyday etc. If a person behaved like that, would you let them into your bed and allow them to kiss you?

So, I think that's the basic answer. If you love dogs, you tolerate them for being them - after all, they are dogs. If you don't love dogs, you don't want them in your apartment doing dog things. anyways, as mentioned about, there may not be a lot of apartments who allow dogs, but there's lots of San Diego Dog Parks .

I love animals but as a non-pet owner I am really thankful that there are so many "no-pet" rental communities to choose from. I am temporarily staying in a “pet-friendly” complex in Little Italy and there is a barking dog two doors down (it is so annoying) and there is dog poop on the sidewalk outside of the complex in several places. Gross. Irresponsible pet owners make it difficult for the responsible pet owners. No mater how nice the complex, if they allow pets it is a deal breaker for me. I don’t get the concept of letting dogs poop on the sidewalk and not picking it up. Seeing poop everywhere down here (not just outside of this complex) has completely eradicated my desire to live downtown.
