incoming to SD and have picked up some great tips on this forum, thanks all!

scanning the neighborhood advice, I still find myself wondering what area would be a good fit for my personal situation, considering i will be renting and not buying, and have no children (that i know of ) so school districts are not an issue. My budget is $1200/m in rent, but noting the numerous $800 apartments advertised around town, I would sacrifice a little comfort to save money (so long as it wasn't a dump).

about me: tend to play the corporate game on weekdays, tho I'm an aging hard rock hippy at heart. the Downtown & the Gaslight District scene would likely be too bourgeois for a daily diet, and from what i've read here the outlying areas of the city sound too conservative for my progressive sensibilities, though i like rustic country living, the deeper inland areas would almost certainly be too hot.

My biggest neighborhood issues are avoiding crime (home break-ins & dealers), avoiding living near too many 24/7 hard partying students or in the mono-culture of a very family focused zone. On the plus side any funky, artsy, laid back neighborhood with perhaps even a watering hole or gathering spot for folks in my general age bracket would be a huge.

your thoughts and suggestions, please.

When no one replies and your post has been listed for quite some time, I would take some meaning into that. Sad but its true. Good Luck.

Look at North Park / Normal Heights, alternatively Ocean Beach.
