Can someone provide specific directions (links, map) to drive "Sunrise Highway" from downtown SD? Wikipedia link is a bit confusing.

Very straightforward. Take either 5, 163, or 94 north to 8 east. Stay on 8 east for 30-40 minutes. Take the exit called "Sunrise Highway". Turn left.

When I've gone up there I usually head back down the mountain through Julian and stop off for some Apple pie and check out the little downtown area.

There are at least a couple of overlooks between Hwy 8 and Julian. They won't be difficult to find. And since you're around 6000 feet up and can see down into the desert, the views are spectacular! If it's clear enough, you'll be able to see the Salton Sea waaaay over towards the east.

If there is any event going on in the learning/nature center south of the town of Mount Laguna, that might be worth a stop. Also, the volunteers at the Forest District office (in a small cabin) just north of the store in Mt. Laguna are usually willing to talk, and they have some interesting stuff to talk about.

and watch out for the cops coming back on WB 8. they monitor the heck out of it for speeders. Very rarely do you see them pull over the Zonies. Usually hiding in the bushes between the 79 and East Willows.
