I was born in Long Beach but spent my childhood in San Diego, Chula Vista, and Santee. I've been in Washington, D.C. for four years and I'm ready to go back home! I've been following this board off and on for years. The only problem is I don't know what the heck my wife and I would do for work.

My last job was communications director for a (Democratic) member of Congress and my wife has a master's degree in international affairs and currently does legislative work for another member of Congress. Jobs working for Democratic members of Congress in San Diego are few, plus most of them are community relations-type work that we don't have experience doing.

It has been so long since I lived in SD that I don't have any contacts there, and I don't think sending out cold resumes to PR firms would yield good results.

Do any of you know of opportunities in San Diego for people like us? Even general suggestions would be useful. And if you work for Susan Davis, Bob Filner, or any other San Diego-area politician I'd love to pick your brain. Thanks!

My guess, unless you can make some contacts with the people you just mentioned you might be better off to stay where you are for the time being. I say this in ernest; we were in a similar situation (yes politics) about 20 years ago and living in the DC area. We decided we could make the move to another place and would have a pretty easy time finding decent jobs. Well, didn't happen, to make a long story short, hubby never really got a chance to do much of anything after we left D.C. Finacually it was the beggest mistake we ever made even though he had great contact. He too, btw, was in communications although he was a older than you appear to be.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Nita

To be totally honest - I don't think you are going to find anything in San Diego that would be a progression on your current skills. The closest you could get is probably going to be a job in corporate marketing or PR. Alternatively perhaps some sort of city or county position as you mentioned. The kicker is you might end up taking a 30-50% pay cut in the process.

I work for a very large Company and our Marketing has taken a hit along with every one and every thing else this last year.
To be honest if you have a job right now dig in and hang on to it. Things will change soon.
