But while he was encouraged with the fan support, Messick said organizing an event in San Diego County was difficult.

“With the exception of the city of San Francisco, we struggle more in San Diego County than anywhere else,” Messick said in March. “Just with the day-to-day of getting stuff done. Permits, city services. What we call plumbing.”

Well, that's just sucky.

The stage up Palomar was Tour de France level riding and the crowds were great. It is a blow to our communities to not have the race coming back. I had posited a final stage that rode up Palomar, came back down, went over Twin Oaks Valley Rd up Double Peak and then end at the Oceanside Pier after last year's event.

Oh well, maybe 2011. The Tour De France doesn't visit the same towns every year, either.

Ya it does suck! I was there last year and it really had that Tour feel to it like I haven't seen in many places. Those grades on Palomar are brutal.

That's a shame. Palomar is tough climb and easily the tour's best stage.
