this topic has been discussed several times in the forum... take a moment and read through some of the older threads, see if that helps you get a better idea of the good & bad, and then post again with some more specific questions.

Also, let us know what type of area you are looking for: suburban? urban? beach? ranch? Party? etc...

Good neighborhoods: Tierrasanta, Scripps Ranch, Poway, La Jolla, East Chula Vista, Lakeside, Rancho Penasquitos, Del Mar. There's more but that's off the top of my head.

Bad: Southeast SD (http://www.sandiego.gov/neighborhoods-map/southeast.shtml (broken link)), Barrio Logan/Logan Heights, Linda Vista, Mira Mesa, Oceanside. I missing some areas but again, it's off the top of my head. These areas have high gang activity compared to the neighborhoods listed in "good neighborhoods".

$2000 per month is enough to find a place in a very good area that is safe and quiet. Anything over $2,000 is pretty much upper class like La Jolla. Have you looked into apartments in Downtown also?

Party and beachy area...PB (Pacific Beach) is probably your best bet. Definitely has that feel in PB, although there are established homes there, as well. Locals would probably say it's a good mix of the young, party crowd and older, established neighborhoods. Have fun with your move!

umm imo places like linda vista and clairmont are not bad areas at all ? They are regular areas with some expensive houses!

The only places I would not live in San Diego are city heights, barrio logan chollas view and mt hope.

Loco - you are late to the party - this person has probably moved here since they stated august as their move date. In any event, I will add my thoughts for any future viewers. North park, Golden Hill, Mission Hills, Hillcrest are all fine areas if you stay away from university and dont go east of 32nd street. Closer to the park the better. Very eclectic areas with lots of charm. Younger single and couple live here and close to the airport and downtown.

Beaches - OB is more beach bumish, and the further north you move, the more upscale it gets (im speaking all the north to Del mar).

Burbs, personally i would stick to Carmel Valley, Western RB and Del mar. Im not a fan of the north inland county areas as everything is 20 years old.

Okay people, Mira Mesa, Linda Vista, and Clairemont are not bad areas. They aren't fancy, hip, or exciting, but they're not bad. Bad would be City Heights, Barrio Logan (although this area may be improving as development is pushing this way), and North Park (hip and exciting, but still bad), as well as the areas nobody's heard of except on the news when someone gets shot: Chollas View, Chollas Creek, Grant Hill, Lincoln Park, Stockton, Mt. Hope, and a few others I can't think of. Pretty much the big chunk of land the front of the phone book calls "Grantville."
