By the way, Im white/male, 35, single, straight - its not a dating ad, just thought it might have something to do with someones opinion of my situation in SD. thnx

FYI the walls of RSF seem to be coming down- now that it looks like 4S Ranch is taking off the past 5 years.

There aren't too many places in SD that are conducive to raising a family. RSF is one of the few suitable places here (just my opinion). You don't get alot of undesirable qualities (take a look at some of the forum threads) of SD living in RSF. I don't know what you are looking for, but eventually if you start a family and if RSF is feasible its where you want to be. If your single and living the crazy life still- you should look into a fancy downtown loft- They built a nice one recently by Petco that has tons of vacancies- you'd probably be able to get a really nice one at a discount and turn it over later for a profit. You'll be surprised at how much more you get in Downtown Sd compared to Manhattan or any other place in the NYC. Just don't expect SD nightlife to compare to the NYC.

Call me crazy but i think people here compared to many other places are unfriendly and generally apathetic toward other people and their communities. Don't get me wrong, I don't think people here are outwardly rude. I guess the plus to this- if you truly didn't want to talk to anyone you don't have to here and its pretty acceptable if you chose to model this behavior. I know folks here get the idea that NYC is some kind of breeding ground for arrogant pricks. I've always enjoyed visiting New York- maybe its just the italian in me. IMO you'll get more showiness and unwarranted cockiness from lots of folks here.

So did you ever find your perfect place in San Diego? I live in the Ranch and I can agree about the lack of real neighbors. No borrowing something you forgot at the store, or walking over for a cocktail. But, it sure is beautiful!! Hope you are enjoying the sunny days and wonderful weather! Just wait, there are really nice days in the middle of January!

I'm not sure what kind of answer I was looking for but just really wanted to hear what people felt about the area in general, but like I expected most focus on the money part and went with "if you can afford it everything will be great" Money isn't an issue but cool neighbors and good times are. Not being able to see your neighbors house because they have armed guards at the end of the driveway even though it's a gated community is kinda lame. - But thanks for your time. D.
Being that you are single, in your 30's, and used to the urban vibe of the east coast, I think you should look into living downtown. LaJolla has a lot of activity and is upscale, and you may also like that area. Pacific Beach is probably the best place for singles but it's a younger crowd, although the northern end of PB towards LaJolla is not as young of a scene.
