Its that time of year again when not only the ants are invading our homes, but more worrisome, the Black Widows seem bent on "setting up house" in our homes.
Are there any effective deterrents to the Black Widow making our homes their homes ?
And do they have any natural predators (besides other Black Widows) ?

The only known natural predator of the Black Widow spider is the bottom of your shoe.

I've done some research in the meantime and found out that there are natural predators of the Black Widow :

1. Other Black Widows.
2. The less common, but more poisonous Brown Widow.
3. Rats & Mice.
4. Salamanders & Lizards.

I wasn't aware of a Brown Widow spider ... although, the Brown Recluse is said to be even more venomous than the Black Widow. I found out the worst thing anybody can do to a Black Widow is spray it with insecticide. They'll hang onto life for a long time, even after applying a seemingly endless amount of bug spray.

They often come out in the evening hours, making their thick, crackly webs. That's the best time to hunt them down and take a good ol' flyswatter to them. Also, look for any eggs nearby and smash them as well. I went on a "widow hunt" for several nights in a row one time and killed dozens of them. Haven't had a problem since.

I have a shoe that discourages them quite well.

Are they fairly common? I'll be moving to SD soon.. I've seen shows about Black Widows and how they hide in your linens. One episode was about a man that was bitten in his sleep and never woke up. Oy

Does it matter where you live? I'd imagine the more greenery the higher the chances. I'll be in a high rise in the city. Regardless I'm sure I'll see one eventually. Siiick

If you're going to be in a high rise in the city, the most you'll probably see is a cockroach brought in by your neighbors. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

I expected to see a few bugs! Even in the nicest hotels in Florida you see a little roach scurry here and there lol
