It depends on where you are and where you want to go. I know quite a few Downtown, Uptown and MidCity people who get by without owning a car (using zipcar etc when needed). Also, many people who live in Mission Valley and commute to work Downtown can do without a car because of the Green Line. Shopping's easy for them to given the retail amenities along that line.

I think I read somewhere that Council President Frye has never had a car.

Theres tons of cabs Downtown...?
Hillcrest and Mission Valley too.

If you're just coming here for a few days, cabs are fine.
Downtown (Broadway) to North Park (Adams /30) is $25-30

I don't have a driver's license, so renting one isn't an option.

Why don't you have a driver's license?

In that part of the city, we do have a fairly good MTS bus system too I'd think taking the bus would be a lot more convenient than calling, waiting for and then paying $30 for a cab between Downtown and North Park.

On principle, I try to use MTS transit whenever possible.

u-k Friend, it will be very difficult to get around without a car. Honest.

Busses are your only economical option. And if you plan on working here it will be even harder.

Good luck to you, I for one love British folks.

You're going to have to live downtown or take the bus all the time. If you don't mind taking the bus and have plenty of time, you can get almost everywhere just fine. Lots of people do this, most of them aren't going to be posting here on this website though because they're busy waiting for a bus.
